On the exam
- When you photograph work for the SI, deliberately include **evidence of process and revision** — studies, alternate versions, in-progress shots — not only polished finals. Some of your 15 images should show the *investigation* itself. A portfolio of 15 finished, unrelated pieces reads as a gallery, not an inquiry, and loses the investigation row.
- Treat the **written evidence** as scored real estate, not a formality. State your inquiry as a question, then connect specific **materials, processes, and ideas** to it, and point at an experiment or revision. Writing that merely names a topic and praises the effort throws away easy points on the investigation row.
- When you sequence your images, put a **decision point** where a reader can see it: the last work of an exhausted direction next to the first work of the new one. That adjacency does more to demonstrate a developing inquiry than any single polished piece, because the change of direction is visible rather than merely claimed in the writing.
- Photograph every piece **the day it is finished**, and photograph stages as you make them. Documentation done continuously is a fifteen-minute habit; documentation postponed becomes a frantic week of bad photographs, and any process stage you covered over is unrecoverable. Check current file and format requirements in the AP Digital Portfolio well before the submission window, not during it.
- Read the current published rubric yourself, early, and translate each row into a checklist question you can ask of your own images. Students who have never read the rubric routinely optimize for the wrong thing — polish and quantity — while the rows are asking for visible inquiry, targeted experimentation, documented revision, and material choices that belong to the idea.
- Readers only ever see your **photographs**, not your actual artwork. A brilliant 2-D piece shot crooked, in yellow light, or out of focus is judged as the flawed image it appears to be. Budget real time to shoot the 5 works well — even lighting, straight-on, accurate color — because poor documentation quietly costs points on both rows.
- Ask a hard question of every candidate: **what does this work prove that the other four do not?** If a piece has no answer, it is occupying a slot rather than earning one. That single question resolves most selection dilemmas faster than any amount of agonizing over favorites.
How to get a 5
- Document your process! Take photos of your work at various stages, as well as your sketchbook pages, to show experimentation.
- Ensure your written statements directly address the prompts and clearly explain the connection between your materials, processes, and ideas.
- Quality over quantity: it's better to submit fewer, highly resolved pieces for your Selected Works than to fill every slot with mediocre work.
- Show evidence of risk-taking and moving beyond your comfort zone in your Sustained Investigation.
- Write the inquiry question first and keep it visible in the studio. Every one of the 15 images should be defensible as evidence for or against that question, and a work you cannot connect to it belongs in Selected Works instead.
- Photograph as you go, not at the end. Material tests, thumbnails, and the state of a work before you revise it cannot be recovered once the piece is finished, and that documentation is precisely what earns experimentation and revision credit.
- Change one variable at a time. A comparison grid in which the ground, palette, and scale are held constant while a single layering or mark-making choice varies proves an experiment happened; a group of works that differ in five ways proves nothing.
- In the written responses, use cause-and-effect sentences rather than chronology. "I observed X, so I changed Y, which produced Z" scores; "first I made a collage, then I made a painting, then I made a print" does not, even if the work is strong.
- Treat image quality as part of the artwork. Because readers see only your uploads, a distorted or badly lit photograph loses skill and synthesis points that the physical work would have earned — shoot square to the surface, in even light, cropped to the edges.

Figure/Ground Relationship — The visual relationship between a foreground object (figure) and its background (ground).
Rule of Thirds — A compositional guideline that places the subject off-center, intersecting at the thirds of the image.
Value Scale — A system of organizing values from light to dark.
Color Theory — The study of color mixing and the visual impacts of specific color combinations.
Complementary Colors — Colors opposite each other on the color wheel (e.g., red/green, blue/orange) that create high contrast.
Monochromatic — A color scheme using only variations in lightness and darkness of a single hue.
Focal Point — The area of an artwork to which the viewer's eye is naturally drawn.
Critique — An evaluation of a work of art, essential for the process of revision.
Portfolio structure at a glance — Sustained Investigation: 15 images, 60% of the score, plus two written responses. Selected Works: 5 works, 40% of the score, each with brief written identifications. Everything is uploaded digitally through the AP Digital Portfolio.
The two Sustained Investigation written responses — 1) Identify the questions that guided the investigation — about 600 characters. 2) Describe how the work shows practice, experimentation, and revision guided by those questions — about 1,200 characters.
What Selected Works asks for — Five works that best show 2-D skills and the synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas — chosen for quality, not to retell the investigation. Each carries very short written identifications of materials, processes, and ideas (roughly 100 characters each).
Inquiry vs. theme — A theme names a subject ("identity", "nature"). An inquiry poses a question that studio decisions can answer ("How can cropping and repetition make a familiar object unrecognizable?"). Only the second can be sustained, tested, and revised.
Practice, experimentation, revision — Practice: repeated, deliberate work that builds skill and knowledge. Experimentation: changing one variable on purpose to see what it does. Revision: altering earlier decisions in response to what an attempt revealed. Readers want visual evidence of all three.
Synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas — The material and the method are chosen because they produce the meaning, not merely because they depict the subject. Test it by asking: if the medium changed, would the idea change? If not, the synthesis is weak.
Elements of art (2-D) — Line, shape, form, value, color, texture, space. These are the components you manipulate. Naming them precisely in the written responses makes intent legible to the reader.
Principles of design (2-D) — Balance, contrast, emphasis, unity and variety, rhythm and repetition, proportion and scale, movement, pattern, and figure-ground relationship. These are the ways elements are organized.
Academic integrity rule — Work based on another artist’s or photographer’s image must move well beyond duplication into substantially new work, and the source must be cited. Unattributed copying can invalidate the portfolio, and changing medium alone is not transformation.
Process documentation — what counts — Studies, thumbnails, material tests photographed as comparison grids, work in progress, annotated planning, failed attempts, and side-by-side before-and-after of a revision. These may occupy some of the 15 Sustained Investigation image slots.
Photographing 2-D work for upload — Shoot square to the surface to avoid keystoning, use even diffuse light with no glare or hotspots, crop tight to the edges, include a neutral background, keep color accurate, and add a detail image only when a full view cannot show the surface.
Figure-ground relationship — How a viewer separates subject from background. Ambiguous or reversible figure-ground makes the eye keep re-deciding what is in front — a strong tool when an inquiry concerns uncertainty, illusion, or competing readings.
