The range of 2-D media
AP Art and Design offers three portfolios — 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, and Drawing — and 2-D covers work that uses a flat surface and two-dimensional design relationships. In practice that includes drawing and painting, printmaking (relief, intaglio, screenprint, monotype), collage and mixed media, photography, digital imaging and digital painting, graphic and type-based design, illustration, and surface or fabric design. Drawing and 2-D overlap, and the two portfolios are distinguished less by the material than by the emphasis — 2-D foregrounds the organization of a flat surface through the elements and principles. What each medium can and cannot do
Every material has affordances — things it does easily — and resistances — things it fights. Charcoal covers large areas fast, gives deep darks and atmospheric edges, and is easy to lift back into; it resists crisp detail and it smudges. Graphite gives control and fine detail but tops out fairly light, so a full black is hard. Watercolor is transparent and luminous, builds depth in glazes, and is largely irreversible — the whites must be reserved, not added. Acrylic is opaque, dries fast, lets you paint over anything, and resists slow soft blending. Oil stays open for hours, so it blends and adjusts, and takes days to dry. Relief printing yields bold shapes, strong positive/negative play, and identical multiples; it resists gradation. Collage brings real texture and the meaning of found material — actual newsprint, actual receipts — and resists smooth transitions. Digital offers unlimited undo, layers, and free rescaling, and tends toward a default slickness unless you build in deliberate marks. Photography binds your image to something that actually existed in front of the lens, and cannot show what was never there without compositing. Knowing the resistances matters as much as the affordances: fighting a medium wastes months, and choosing the medium whose resistance is your subject can be the best decision in a portfolio.
Matching material to intent — and using constraint
Choose materials by working backward from the effect you need. Name the visual quality your inquiry demands — dissolving edges, hard graphic flatness, physical grit, exact repetition, layered history — then pick the medium whose natural behavior already produces it. Wanting dissolving edges and choosing hard-edged cut vinyl means fighting your material for a year; wanting exact repetition with slight drift and choosing relief printing means the medium does the work for you. Watch also for habit choices: most students default to whatever they were taught first, and habit is not intent. Finally, remember that constraint generates more discovery than accumulation. Restricting yourself — three values only, one brush, a two-color palette, one process repeated with a single variable changed — produces far more genuine experimentation than adding another material. Buying new supplies feels like experimenting; it usually is not.
A student’s inquiry asks how a surface can look eroded — worn away, with earlier states half-visible. They currently work in smooth digital illustration. Choose and justify materials and processes.
- 1.State the required visual quality precisely: not "old-looking," but subtractive history — evidence that material was removed and that earlier layers remain partly visible.
- 2.Test the current medium against that need: smooth digital illustration is additive and reversible, and its undo history is invisible in the final file, so it must simulate erosion rather than record it. That is a resistance, not an affordance.
- 3.Look for media whose natural behavior is subtractive and layered: sanding or scraping back layered acrylic; lifting and staining watercolor; monotype ghost prints where each pull is fainter; charcoal built up and erased so gray traces stay; collage layers torn to reveal what is beneath.
- 4.Choose a small set and pair them with a process, not just a material: layered acrylic sanded back between coats, plus a series of ghost monotypes from a single inked plate, so both give real removal and real residue.
- 5.Add a constraint so the tests are comparable: fix the image and the palette, and vary only how much is removed.
- 6.Keep the digital work as a documented experiment: it establishes why the shift was needed, which is a decision point worth showing.
Before adopting a new medium for a major piece, spend one session on small tests only — six index-card-sized trials pushing the material to its limits. You will learn its resistances in an hour instead of ruining a three-week piece, and the tests themselves are exactly the kind of experimentation evidence your documentation needs.
A student wants luminous, glowing depth built from many transparent layers, with the white of the paper doing the work. Which medium best matches that intent?
Buying more materials is not experimentation. A portfolio that switches medium every piece often shows less genuine investigation than one that keeps a single process and rigorously varies one element at a time — because with a new medium every time, nothing is comparable and no finding can be isolated.
