Light and camera position

Readers never see your artwork — they see your photograph, so the photograph is the submission. Two rules do most of the work. Even light: either two lights of equal power placed at roughly 45 degrees on each side, equal distance from the work, or bright indirect daylight — open shade or an overcast day, or a window with no sun coming through it. Avoid direct sun (harsh shadows, blown highlights) and avoid the on-camera flash, which produces a bright hotspot in the middle and dark corners. Square-on framing: the camera must sit perpendicular to the center of the work, with the sensor plane parallel to the surface, or verticals splay and rectangles turn into trapezoids. Put the work flat on a wall or floor, put the camera on a tripod at the exact center height, and step back rather than shooting close and wide, which stretches the edges. For glossy or varnished surfaces, photograph the work unframed and unglazed and angle your lights further to the side until the reflections disappear.

Color accuracy, cropping, and file quality

Color: set white balance to the actual light you are using, or include a plain white or gray card in a test frame and correct to it. Never mix light sources — a warm bulb plus cool window light guarantees a color cast that no single correction can fix. Compare the photo to the real work side by side before accepting it. Cropping: crop exactly to the edges of the work — no desk, no tape, no fingers, no cutting mat, no leftover background border — and straighten it so the edges are parallel to the frame. If a raw or deckled edge is genuinely part of the piece, keep it, but keep it deliberately, not accidentally. Editing: adjustments should make the photograph match the object, not improve on it; do not repaint, recolor, or clean up the artwork in software. Files: shoot at the highest quality your camera offers and keep the original — never upscale a small file, since resolution cannot be invented. Because accepted file formats, dimensions, and size limits are set by the College Board and can change, confirm the current specifications on the AP 2-D Art and Design course page and in the AP Digital Portfolio before you export.

Detail shots and process images that actually prove something

A detail shot is not a random zoom. It should show a reader something the full view physically cannot: the texture of a surface, the edge where two processes meet, a stitched or torn seam, the grain of a print, a passage of layering. If the detail carries no new information, it wastes an image slot. Process images matter even more in the Sustained Investigation, because they are how practice, experimentation, and revision become visible: in-progress states, test strips and studies laid out together, a plate or screen mid-process, an early version beside its reworking. The critical habit is shoot as you go — once a layer is buried, that stage is gone forever, and no amount of care at the end can recover it. Photograph at each significant stage, name the files so you can find them (date, piece, stage), and keep everything in one master folder. Students who document continuously spend submission week assembling; students who do not spend it re-photographing work in bad light against a deadline.

Worked example

A student photographs a large charcoal drawing on their bedroom floor at night using the ceiling light and the camera flash, standing over it at an angle. The result: yellow-gray tone, a bright blob in the middle, the drawing narrower at the top, and carpet visible around two edges. Fix the shoot.

  1. 1.Diagnose each fault against a cause: the yellow cast comes from the warm ceiling bulb and wrong white balance; the bright blob is the on-camera flash; the narrowing at the top is keystoning from shooting at an angle; the visible carpet is a cropping failure.
  2. 2.Fix the light: switch the flash off, turn off the ceiling bulb, and either shoot near a window in bright indirect daylight or set two equal lamps at about 45 degrees on either side, at equal distance, so the illumination across the sheet is even.
  3. 3.Fix the geometry: tape the drawing flat to a wall, set the camera on a tripod so the lens is level with and centered on the middle of the drawing, and shoot straight on from a few steps back rather than close and angled.
  4. 4.Fix the color: set white balance for the light in use, shoot one frame with a white card in it, correct to that, then hold the photo next to the actual drawing and check the grays read as neutral.
  5. 5.Check evenness before shooting the real frame: charcoal is matte but the paper still has sheen, so look for a hot side and equalize the lamp distances.
  6. 6.Crop and export: crop tight to the paper edges, straighten, keep the full-resolution original, and add one detail frame of the darkest passage to show the charcoal build-up.
  7. 7.Confirm the export settings against the current file requirements on the College Board AP 2-D Art and Design page rather than assuming last year’s numbers.
Answer: Flash off, single light source, two equal lights at roughly 45 degrees or bright indirect daylight; work flat on a wall with the camera centered, level, and perpendicular on a tripod; white balance set to the light in use and checked against a white card and the real drawing; cropped to the paper edge with no carpet; full-resolution original kept and a purposeful detail of the darkest passage added. The image now represents the drawing instead of misrepresenting it.
Watch out

The documentation mistakes that quietly cost the most points are all avoidable: flash hotspots, mixed warm and cool light, shooting at an angle so the work keystones, background and hands left in frame, reflections off glass or varnish, out-of-focus or motion-blurred frames, over-processed color that no longer matches the object, low-resolution or upscaled files, and — worst — discovering at the end of the year that no in-progress photographs exist because nothing was shot along the way.

On the exam

Photograph every piece the day it is finished, and photograph stages as you make them. Documentation done continuously is a fifteen-minute habit; documentation postponed becomes a frantic week of bad photographs, and any process stage you covered over is unrecoverable. Check current file and format requirements in the AP Digital Portfolio well before the submission window, not during it.
