What the Sustained Investigation asks of you

The Sustained Investigation (SI) is the larger half of your AP 2-D portfolio — 15 images plus writing, worth 60% of your score. It is not a themed collection of your best pictures. It is the visible record of an inquiry: a question or idea you chose, then explored, tested, and pushed over many works. Readers score the SI on two rubric rows — one for the investigation itself (inquiry driving practice, experimentation, and revision) and one for skillful synthesis of 2-D materials, processes, and ideas. Everything in the unit serves those two rows.

What makes an inquiry "guiding"

A guiding inquiry is usually phrased as a question — open enough to sustain 15 works, specific enough to actually investigate. Compare "nature" (a topic, not a question) with "How can layered, translucent color make a familiar landscape feel unstable or dissolving?" The second names a visual problem you can attack from many angles, revise, and answer differently over time. A strong inquiry points at things you can see and change: materials, processes, and the elements and principles of design. A weak one just names a subject and leaves you illustrating it 15 ways.

Inquiry is a starting point, not a contract

Your inquiry is allowed — even expected — to evolve. Readers reward investigations that develop: a question that narrows, splits, or shifts because of what the work revealed. What loses points is having no visible question at all, or one so vague ("exploring emotions through art") that no experiment could confirm or complicate it. Write your inquiry down early, but treat it as a hypothesis you are free to revise as the images teach you something.

Worked example

A student says, "I want my Sustained Investigation to be about the ocean." Turn this broad idea into a guiding inquiry strong enough to drive 15 works.

  1. 1.Name why the topic matters visually, not just personally: the student is drawn to how water hides and reveals what is beneath it — a problem of transparency, distortion, and depth.
  2. 2.Convert the topic into a question about seeing and making: not "the ocean," but "how can I represent something that is only partly visible?"
  3. 3.Anchor the question to elements, principles, and process the student can manipulate: transparency and value (to show depth), edges and distortion (to show water bending light), layered media (to build up murkiness).
  4. 4.Phrase it as one testable inquiry and sanity-check that it invites many different experiments, not one repeated picture.
Answer: A workable guiding inquiry: "How can layered, semi-transparent media and shifting value distort a submerged subject so the viewer sees only part of it?" It names a visual problem (partial visibility through water), points at controllable tools (layering, transparency, value, distorted edges), and can be attacked from 15 different directions — the mark of an inquiry rather than a theme.
Watch out

The single most common SI rubric loss is submitting a theme instead of an inquiry — 15 well-made pictures "about" a subject with no question, no experiments, and no visible development. A pretty, coherent body of work still scores low on the investigation row if a reader cannot find the question you were asking.

Pressure-test a draft inquiry with one question: "Could I answer this two different ways in two different works?" If yes, it is an inquiry. If every work would look basically the same, you have a subject, and you need to name the visual problem hiding inside it.
