Two idea engines: the sketchbook and the maquette
In three dimensions, drawing alone cannot tell you whether an idea works. Use two engines together. The sketchbook generates quantity: fast thumbnails of the same form from several sides, notes on scale and material, arrows for how a viewer would move around it, diagrams of how parts might join. The maquette generates truth: a small, cheap test build in cardboard, foil, wire, plasticine, or foam that answers questions a drawing cannot — will it stand, what does the back look like, where does it want to break, does the void read as a void. A useful working rule is sketch to open options, maquette to close them. Date both, and keep them; they are also your best later evidence of process.
Research that changes the work
Three kinds of research earn their time. Artist research should ask how a maker solved a problem you have — how they got mass onto a small footprint, how they treated a surface, how they handled a join — not simply what they depicted. Object and material research means handling real things: tools at a salvage yard, a garment turned inside out, a broken chair, work in a museum you can walk around. Note how it was made, how it was joined, where it wears. Process research means tests: fire a sample tile, pour a small plaster block, weld a scrap of the same gauge, print one small section. Passive image-collecting on a screen is the weakest form of research because nothing comes back into your hands. For each source, write down the one thing you took from it — a proportion, a joining method, a surface.
A personal question beats a generic theme
Broad themes — identity, nature, mental health, social media — arrive pre-answered. Hundreds of portfolios use them, and readers see the same stock objects made from the same stock references. A personal question comes from material only you have access to: your grandfather’s toolbox, the exact way a fishing net is knotted, the barn that collapsed on your road, the crockery your family will not throw away. Because the source is yours, you can go back and measure it, photograph it, take it apart, and rebuild it — which is exactly what sustains fifteen works. Work from your own visual sources: your photographs, your drawings, objects you can hold. Building from a stranger’s photograph found online is weaker and an academic-integrity risk, because the source is not yours and must be transformed and credited.
A student says, "I want my Sustained Investigation to be about memory." Turn that into a researched, personal 3-D starting point with concrete first steps.
- 1.Refuse the abstraction and ask what specific object carries memory for this student: they keep a box of their late grandmother’s mended kitchenware — plates riveted, handles rebound with wire.
- 2.Find the three-dimensional problem inside it: these are objects whose repairs are visible, so the problem is how a mend can be made more present than the thing it saves.
- 3.Line up research that returns something to the hands: measure and photograph the actual mended objects; look at how makers treat visible repair and joinery; test three joins in scrap — riveting, binding with wire, and filling a break.
- 4.Convert it into an inquiry: "How can a visible repair become the most important form in an object, so the mend outweighs the vessel?"
- 5.Plan the first three maquettes as tests of that question, not as finished pieces: one where the mend is oversized, one where the repair is the only rigid structure, one where the vessel is barely there.
Keep a dated idea log: thumbnails, photos of every maquette, and one line per entry saying what the test taught you. It costs minutes a week, it stops good accidents from being forgotten, and by spring it is the raw material for both your image sequence and your written evidence.
Research that never leaves the screen rarely changes the work. Saving fifty sculpture photographs is not research; measuring one real object, or testing one join in scrap, is. And if you do build from imagery or an object you did not make, that source must be substantially transformed and credited — an uncredited close derivation puts the whole portfolio at risk.
