How an Inquiry Evolves Through Making: Failure, Iteration & Decision Points

In 3-D, failure is data
A drawing that is not working fails quietly. Three-dimensional work fails physically and loudly: a slab join opens as the clay shrinks, a cantilever sags overnight, plaster sets in the bucket before you pour, a weld burns through sheet that was too thin, a print delaminates along its layer lines, glue lets go the first time the piece is lifted. Each of those failures names a variable. Diagnose before you rebuild: was the cause material (moisture, thickness, gauge, grain), structure (unsupported span, center of gravity outside the footprint, a join carrying more force than it was designed for), or process (rushed drying, wrong join, wrong order of operations)? A student who can say why it failed has learned something a student who simply rebuilds has not.
Decision points are the spine of an investigation
A decision point is a moment you changed something on purpose, plus the reason. Record it in three parts: what I saw, what I changed, and what that did to the question. Four or five well-documented decision points across a year read unmistakably as investigation; twenty objects with no recorded decisions read as production, however good they are. Decision points are what your written evidence quotes and what an image sequence makes visible — a maquette beside the build it produced, a first version beside the reworked one. If you cannot name the decisions in your own portfolio, a reader certainly cannot find them.
When the material asks a better question
Sometimes what the material does is more interesting than what you planned. Unfired clay cracks into a map of its own drying; wax slumps in a warm room; steel blooms with rust; wood splits along the grain and the split is beautiful. If the accident sits closer to what you actually care about, promote it — the inquiry is allowed to shift, and readers reward an inquiry that develops. What must not break is traceability: the new question should be recognizable as a descendant of the old one, and your writing should say what turned it. "The drying cracks did what I had been trying to carve, so the question became how far the material could be allowed to do the making" is a developing inquiry. Ten unrelated pivots is not.
A student’s inquiry is "how can a stacked column of clay forms read as unstable but hold?" The fourth stack collapses while drying. Turn that collapse into investigation rather than a lost week.
- 1.Diagnose before touching anything: walls were thick and uneven, the joins were pressed rather than scored and slipped, and the stack dried unevenly, so shrinkage pulled the joins apart while the top was still heavy and plastic.
- 2.Photograph the collapse exactly as it fell, then photograph the broken joins close up — that surface is the evidence of what failed, and cleaning up destroys it.
- 3.Separate the process correction from the discovery: correct the process (hollow to an even wall, score and slip every join, dry slowly and evenly under plastic) but notice the discovery — the fallen stack looked more like the idea than the standing one ever did.
- 4.Design the next build as a deliberate test of the new question: a stack arrested mid-collapse, held by a hidden internal steel armature so the piece is genuinely stable while reading as mid-fall.
- 5.Write the decision point: what was seen, what changed, and how the question moved from "unstable but holding" toward "arrested collapse."
Do not sweep the wreckage into the bin before you photograph it. A cracked join, a slumped wax, a failed pour, or a warped print is often your clearest proof that you were testing something — and once it is cleaned up it is gone permanently. Shoot the failure first, then clean.
End every studio session with one line: date, what you tried, what happened, what you will change next. It takes thirty seconds, it makes decision points trivial to find in April, and it turns vague memory into the specific language your written evidence needs.
