Documenting 3-D Work: Viewpoints, Light, Scale & Detail

Viewpoints and background: a set, not snapshots
A photograph flattens, so decide before shooting which views a work actually needs: one that shows the whole form clearly, a second roughly ninety degrees around (or from behind, if the back does something different), a low or high angle if the piece is meant to be met that way, and a detail. Then control the background. Plain and neutral — a seamless sweep of gray, white, or black paper or cloth — with no studio clutter, no chairs, no doorframes, no other students’ work sharing the frame. Just as important, keep it consistent across the whole submission: when every image shares one background, the reader compares your works instead of your rooms. Camera around the work’s mid-height, not so close that a wide lens distorts proportion, the piece straight and level, cropped tight but never clipped, and white balance set so color is accurate.
Light is how form gets into the photograph
Two lighting strategies, chosen on purpose. Even, diffuse light — two soft sources, or an overcast window — gives accurate color and clean tone, which matters for glaze and paint, but it can flatten volume into a silhouette. Raking light — a single low source almost parallel to the surface — throws long shadows across the surface and makes texture legible: tool marks, carving, weld beads, relief, stitch structure, the grain of a print. For a full view, use a main light off to one side with a fill or reflector, so the mass has a lit side and a shadowed side and reads as solid. For a surface detail, rake it. Avoid a single hard on-camera flash: it flattens form, blows out surface, and stamps a hard rim shadow onto the background — the classic look of documentation done in the last hour.
Scale, detail, and proof of process
A photograph has no size. A ten-centimeter maquette and a two-meter construction can look identical, so establish scale: state dimensions in your writing, and in at least one image include something whose size is unambiguous — a hand, a doorway, a person, the room. Include detail shots of what a full view hides and where your skill actually lives: joins, welds, seams, edges, glaze breaks, tool marks. And include in-progress images — the armature before it was covered, the mold, the maquette, the piece mid-carve — because they prove process that a finished object cannot. The mistakes that quietly cost credit are consistent: cluttered or changing backgrounds; on-camera flash; a single view of a work with an important back; soft focus or motion blur; heavy filters and retouching that misrepresent the object; a fragile or room-scale work shown only as one distant snapshot; and details cropped so tight that the reader cannot tell what part of the work they are looking at.
A student’s images of a welded steel piece are all shot on the workshop floor with tools visible, lit by overhead fluorescents plus on-camera flash, all from the same front angle, with no detail shots and no way to tell whether the piece is 30 cm or 2 m tall. Rebuild the shoot.
- 1.Fix the environment first: hang a plain neutral sweep and commit to using the same background for every image in the submission, so the reader compares works rather than rooms.
- 2.Light for form instead of for exposure: turn the flash off, put one main light off to one side, and bring a reflector or second softer light in as fill so the mass shows a lit side and a shadowed side.
- 3.Add a raking shot for the surface: drop a light low and nearly parallel to the welded seams so the weld beads, grinding marks, and rust texture become legible.
- 4.Shoot the views the work needs: a second angle about ninety degrees around, one from the height the work is meant to be met at, and a detail of a join.
- 5.Answer the scale question explicitly: give the dimensions in the writing and include one image with an unambiguous size reference in it.
- 6.Add process evidence: the parts cut and tacked together before final welding, and the maquette that preceded them.
Image counts, file specifications, and the exact wording of the written prompts are set by College Board and can change from year to year. Get the process right — the views a work needs, a neutral consistent background, form-revealing light, scale, detail, in-progress — and then confirm the current technical requirements and deadlines on the official AP 3-D Art and Design course page before you upload. Never build a submission plan on last year’s numbers or on a classmate’s memory of them.
Heavy filters, aggressive retouching, and lighting that invents surface the object does not have all misrepresent the work — and a reader comparing your images will notice the inconsistency between them. Photograph the object you actually made, and fix problems in the object rather than in the edit.
