Reading the Sustained Investigation Rubric & Running a Year of Slow Processes

The focus areas readers are looking for

Rather than memorizing row numbers, learn the focus areas the Sustained Investigation is scored against. Inquiry — is there a clear, specific question, visible in the works and stated in the writing? Practice, experimentation, and revision — can a reader see skills being built, genuinely different approaches being tried, and works deliberately changed? Synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas — do the 3-D materials and processes carry the idea, or are they simply what was on hand? Written evidence — does the writing identify the inquiry and describe the process so that the images make sense? Images and writing are read together; neither can carry the score alone. Because the exact rubric wording and point structure can be updated, check the current scoring information on the official AP 3-D Art and Design course page — but these focus areas are what the rubric has consistently been about.

High versus middling — usually not a craft gap

The difference is rarely skill with tools. A middling investigation looks like: a coherent-seeming group of objects where the question is implied but never named or tested; "experimentation" that amounts to changing subject matter rather than changing an approach; "revision" that is really repair or polish on the same object; writing that describes what the objects are; a material used because it was in the room. A high investigation looks like: a specific question you can restate in one sentence; a visible chain where each build answers something the previous build raised; revision that changes a work’s structure, scale, material, or viewing conditions for a stated reason; maquette and process images that make the thinking visible; material choices whose physical properties are inseparable from the idea; and writing that names the question and points at the decisions. Two portfolios with identical craft routinely land far apart on exactly these grounds.

Time management when the material sets the pace

3-D is the course where the calendar beats students. Steps you cannot compress: clay must dry evenly and be bone dry before bisque firing (thick work: days to weeks); a kiln cycle plus cooling takes a day or more and the kiln is shared with a whole class; glazing means a second firing; plaster and concrete set fast but cure slowly and get heavy; wood glue-ups need clamp time and finishes need cure time between coats; welding needs shop access and supervision; prints run for hours and fail overnight; found material has to actually be found. So: work in parallel — build the next piece while one dries or waits for the kiln, and never let the queue idle. Schedule backward from the submission deadline, counting kiln slots rather than calendar days. Run material tests early, while there is still time to change course. Photograph as you go, because a piece that has been fired, glazed, painted over, dismantled, or given away can never be reshot in its earlier state. And protect the final stretch for documentation, image sequencing, and writing — not for building. Confirm the current deadline on the official course page rather than assuming last year’s date.

Worked example

Six weeks from submission, a student has clay work still unfired, three pieces they intend to rework, and no process photographs at all. Build a triage plan.

  1. 1.Fix the hard constraint first: bisque plus glaze means at least two kiln cycles with drying and cooling around them, on a kiln shared by the class — that determines the last possible day anything wet can enter the queue.
  2. 2.Triage the wet work against that date: anything not yet bone dry goes to the front, thick or uneven walls get hollowed and evened now, and accept that some pieces simply will not be fired in time.
  3. 3.Photograph everything today, in whatever state it is in — unfired, in progress, on the armature — because firing, glazing, and assembly destroy those states permanently.
  4. 4.Re-plan the intended "revision" as work that does not need the kiln: re-proportioning a base, changing a mount, remaking a join, or reshooting a piece from the viewpoint and under the light the inquiry now demands.
  5. 5.Reserve the final week or two entirely for documentation, sequencing the images so the investigation reads in order, and writing — with no new builds started.
Answer: The plan is: set the kiln calendar first and work backward from it; get anything wet dried and queued immediately; photograph every current state today because firing and glazing erase it; run non-kiln revision in parallel; and hold the last stretch for documentation, image order, and writing. Six weeks is enough to finish an investigation well and nowhere near enough to start one — the binding constraint is the material’s clock, not the student’s effort.
Tip

Set an internal deadline several weeks ahead of the official one and treat it as real. In 3-D the late crisis is almost never "I have no ideas" — it is "my work is still wet", "the kiln is full", or "I never photographed the armature".

On the exam

Readers meet your investigation as images plus writing, in the order you chose. Do a cold read before submitting: hand someone your image sequence and ask them to state your question and point to a place where you changed something on purpose. If they cannot, no amount of craft will rescue it — reorder the images and rewrite until they can.
