What "Skill" Means in Three Dimensions

The 3-D elements, precisely
Form is the three-dimensional shape itself — open or closed, geometric or organic — and it must be read as a silhouette that changes as a viewer moves. Volume is the space the form occupies or encloses; a work can be large in volume and hollow, and the void inside is part of the work rather than an absence of it. Mass is the sense of weight and density: how heavy the work looks and how heavy it actually is, two things a maker can deliberately set against each other. Plane is a flat or curved surface bounding or slicing through the form — a work built from planes (sheet, slab, plate) reads and behaves nothing like a work built from mass. Skill in 3-D is control of these four: a form resolved from every side, volume that is intentional rather than leftover, mass that behaves as the maker wanted, and planes that meet at edges that were decided.
The principles become physical facts
In three dimensions the principles stop being compositional metaphors and become measurable. Balance is literal stability: where the center of gravity sits, whether asymmetry is resolved by counterweight or anchoring — and visual balance can be deliberately set against physical balance so a perfectly stable work reads as precarious. Movement is the viewer’s path: 3-D work is experienced by walking around it, so movement is how the form leads the eye and the body around and through the piece, whether there is a front, and what the back does. Proportion is real scale — how parts relate to each other and to the human body, hand-held versus table-top versus body-scale versus architectural — and scale itself is content, not presentation. Rhythm and repetition run in the round rather than across a surface; emphasis is where a form, an edge, or a void collects attention; unity is whether the parts finally read as one object.
Surface is a decision, not a finishing step
Surface is where 3-D skill is most often thrown away. Every surface choice says something: visible tool marks declare the process, a burnished or polished surface conceals it, glaze can either follow a form’s curvature or paste a pattern over it, paint on sculpture is risky because it can flatten form into colored shape, raw material asserts its own identity, and patina, rust, or wear imply time. The test is whether the surface serves the form — does the finish let a viewer read volume and edges, or does it hide them? Unresolved surface reads as lack of skill even when the form is strong: glue squeeze-out, unsanded fills, hot-glue strings, an unfinished underside, a base that rocks, fingerprints under a glaze. Finish the parts nobody was supposed to look at, because photographs are unforgiving and readers only see photographs.
A Selected Works candidate is a wall-mounted assemblage of painted plywood shapes. A teacher says it "reads as a picture, not a sculpture." Diagnose it with the 3-D elements and principles, then prescribe changes.
- 1.Test form and volume: the parts are thin planes hung flat against the wall, so the silhouette barely changes as a viewer moves and the work encloses almost no volume — it behaves as a composition on a surface.
- 2.Test mass: uniform thin plywood throughout gives no variation in apparent weight, so nothing reads as heavy and nothing reads as light.
- 3.Test movement as the viewer’s path: everything faces one direction and nothing happens at the sides or the back, so there is no reason for anyone to walk around it.
- 4.Test surface: flat opaque color across every face flattens the planes further into shapes, canceling the little depth the work does have.
- 5.Prescribe changes that engage real space: project parts forward off the wall at different depths so the silhouette changes with viewpoint, vary thickness and material so mass genuinely differs, open voids so the wall is seen through the work, and leave some faces as raw grain so light rather than pigment describes the form.
Test every Selected Works candidate by walking a full circle around it and photographing four sides. If two of those views are dull, unresolved, or obviously "the back", the work is not finished in the round yet — and a reader will end up seeing one of those views.
Surface faults sink otherwise strong work: glue squeeze-out, unsanded fills, hot-glue strings, an unpainted underside, a base that rocks, fingerprints under the glaze. In photographs these never read as charming — they read as loss of control over the form. Budget finishing time as seriously as building time.
