How a Drawing Inquiry Evolves: Series, Variables & Knowing When to Stop

The series, not the single drawing, is the unit of investigation

A single drawing can only show a result. Development is only visible across works, so the practical unit of a sustained investigation is the series: three to six drawings that hold the inquiry fixed and change one thing deliberately. When only one variable moves, a reader can infer the reason for the change without being told, and you can actually learn something — with three variables moving at once, a difference tells you nothing about which change caused it. Plan the year as a chain of series, each launched by what the previous one revealed, rather than as a list of ambitious individual drawings. A portfolio built from three or four linked series almost always reads as more investigative than the same number of unrelated finished pieces, even when the individual drawings are less polished.

Four variables that change what a drawing knows

Scale. A small drawing is made with the wrist and rewards notation and economy; a full sheet is made with the arm and shoulder and forces you to invent surface — halftone, texture, mark density — to fill area. Enlarging a successful small drawing is the fastest way to discover whether you understood the form or merely memorized a pattern of marks. Medium. Moving from graphite to compressed charcoal takes away fine control and forces mass; moving to a pen takes away gradation and forces you to build tone out of line density. The medium removes a crutch and shows what you were relying on. Viewpoint. Raising, lowering or crowding the vantage point changes the spatial problem: seen from above, an object loses its familiar silhouette and becomes a shape puzzle; from an extreme close-up, context disappears and value becomes the subject. Duration. A two-minute drawing records what the subject does; a six-hour drawing records what it is. Running one subject at 2, 20 and 120 minutes tells you which kind of information your inquiry actually needs — and it is often not the longest one.

Decision points, and when a direction is exhausted

A decision point is the moment you chose to change something, plus the reason. Write it down at the time, one dated line in the sketchbook: "the big version went muddy, so next I work on a toned ground and add the lights instead of digging them out." These lines are cheap to make and expensive to reconstruct in May, and they become both your written evidence and the logic that orders your images. Exhaustion is different from difficulty. A direction is exhausted when new drawings stop surprising you: you can predict the result before you make it, and the only changes left are decorative — a new subject receiving the same solution. A run of failures is usually the opposite signal; it often means the problem has finally become real. The test is one question: can you name one specific thing the next drawing would teach you? If yes, keep going. If no, change a variable, narrow the question, or let the finding you already have launch the next series.

Worked example

A student’s inquiry is "How can drawn folds in cloth carry the sense of a body that has just left the room?" After five careful A4 graphite drawings of drapery, the work is competent but inert. Design the next series.

  1. 1.Audit the variables across the five drawings: same size, same medium, same eye-level viewpoint, same three-hour duration. Nothing has been varied, so nothing has been tested and nothing has been learned.
  2. 2.Choose the variable with the most to reveal about this inquiry: the question is about aftermath and motion held still, and a three-hour rendering describes cloth rather than an event — so duration is the lever.
  3. 3.Build the series so duration is the only change: the same drapery, same paper size, same graphite, drawn at 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 45 minutes and 3 hours.
  4. 4.Read the result honestly: the 2- and 10-minute drawings, made of gesture and pressure changes, carry the sense of a departed body far better than the fully rendered one, which describes fabric.
  5. 5.Record the decision point the same day: "speed carries the absence; rendering kills it — next test whether speed survives at large scale."
  6. 6.Launch the next series from that finding: full-sheet charcoal at 10 minutes, so the marks are made with the shoulder and the collapse of the cloth reads at body size.
Answer: The student converts a static run of near-identical drawings into a duration ladder — one variable changed, one finding produced, one dated decision recorded — and then lets that finding define the next series (speed plus scale, in a medium that can keep up). That chain of series → finding → decision → next series is precisely what the investigation row means by an inquiry that develops, and it is legible in the images without a reader needing to be told.
Tip

Keep a one-line dated decision log at the back of the sketchbook: what you changed, and why. Ten seconds per entry. It is the single highest-return habit in the course, because it turns a pile of drawings into a documented investigation and drafts your written evidence for you.

On the exam

Sequence your submitted images so the chain is legible: put an experiment beside the result it produced, and a "before" beside its reworking. Readers should be able to follow the reasoning by looking, not by inferring. Unordered images make a developing investigation look like an assortment.
