Value: range, families and the squint test

Most drawings that "feel flat" fail on value rather than on drawing. There are two separate faults. The first is range: living in a timid band of light grays, never using the true white of the paper and never reaching the darkest note the medium can give. The second, more common, is structure: values scattered across the sheet instead of organized. A convincing drawing usually sorts everything into a light family and a shadow family, keeps those two families clearly separated, and only then allows variation inside each one. Two studio disciplines make this concrete. Make a five- or nine-step value scale in your actual medium, so you know your genuine darkest dark rather than guessing at it. And squint at the drawing until detail disappears: what remains should be a legible pattern of a few large shapes. If squinting turns your drawing into an even mush, the value structure is missing, and no amount of extra detail will supply it.

Light on form: the anatomy of a lit object

One light source on a rounded form produces a predictable sequence, and drawing it correctly is most of what makes form read as solid. There is a highlight where the surface faces the light most directly; a light family falling off gradually as the surface turns; the core shadow (the terminator) — a distinct band that is the darkest value on the object itself, where the surface finally turns away from the light; reflected light bouncing back into the shadow from nearby surfaces, which lifts the shadow slightly but must stay clearly darker than anything in the light family; and the cast shadow thrown onto other surfaces, usually the darkest note in the picture and sharpest where the object meets the surface, softening as it travels away. Two errors dominate student drawings: making reflected light so bright that it breaks out of the shadow family, which makes the form look transparent or hollow; and drawing every shadow edge with the same sharpness. Edge quality carries form as much as value does — a soft edge is a surface turning away, a hard edge is a plane change, a silhouette, or a place you have decided the eye should go. Vary edges on purpose, not by accident.

Space and composition

Space in drawing runs on two engines. Linear perspective is structural: one consistent eye level, parallel edges converging to vanishing points that sit on that eye level, and foreshortening — the willingness to draw a shape much shorter than you know the object to be. Check it by asking whether every set of receding parallels converges at the same height. Atmospheric perspective is tonal: with distance, contrast compresses, darks lighten, edges soften and detail drops away. In monochrome drawing this is the most powerful depth tool you have — a crisp near-black foreground edge against a soft mid-gray distant one reads as deep space with no perspective lines at all — with overlap and relative scale doing the rest. Composition then decides what the space means: where the format is divided, whether figure and ground compete or one clearly dominates, what is cropped away, where the eye enters and whether it can leave. A centered, symmetrical, evenly described drawing reads as stable and often inert; a compressed, off-balance, largely dark drawing with one small light reads as urgent. Choose the structure that argues your inquiry, and test it in postage-stamp thumbnails before you commit a full sheet.

Worked example

A student’s drawing of a white ceramic cup on a white cloth has accurate proportions but reads as flat and papery. Diagnose and repair it using value, light and edge.

  1. 1.Squint at it first: the whole drawing collapses into a single pale gray, so there is no light/shadow separation at all — the proportions are fine and the value structure is absent.
  2. 2.Establish range before anything else: find the darkest notes available — the cast shadow where the cup meets the cloth, and the inside of the cup — and commit them near the medium’s true black, while leaving the lit top plane as untouched paper.
  3. 3.Sort everything into two families: every surface turning away from the light joins the shadow family and goes no lighter than one chosen middle value, even though the object is white. Local color is not value.
  4. 4.Build the form sequence across the cup’s side: gradual fall-off through the light family, then a distinct core shadow where the surface turns away, then a slight lift from light bouncing off the white cloth — kept clearly darker than the palest light-family value.
  5. 5.Repair the edges: keep the cast shadow crisp where it touches the base of the cup and let it soften as it travels outward; soften the rim edge where the cup turns away; keep one hard edge where the cup meets the darkest background note.
Answer: The cup becomes solid without a single new detail being added. What changed is that the drawing now has a real range, two clearly separated value families, a correct light-to-core-shadow-to-reflected-light sequence on the form, and edges that vary according to what they describe. The underlying lesson is that "the cup is white" is a statement about local color, not about value — most of a white object in shadow is darker than most of a black object in light.
Tip

Two cheap habits fix more drawings than any technique: make a value scale in your medium so you know your true darkest dark, and thumbnail the composition at postage-stamp size first. At that size only the big value shapes survive — which is exactly what a viewer sees in the first second.

Watch out

Two habitual errors flatten form: rendering reflected light so bright that the shadow family breaks apart (the object goes hollow), and giving every shadow edge the same sharpness. A cast shadow is crisp where the object touches the surface and softens as it travels; keeping reflected light subordinate to the light family is what keeps a form reading as solid.
