Three engines: practice, experimentation, revision
The investigation row asks a reader to see three things across your 15 images. Practice is deliberate, repeated drawing that builds control — the same gesture or edge drawn until the hand obeys. Experimentation is trying genuinely different approaches to your inquiry — a new drawing medium, mark, value strategy, or composition — to learn what it reveals. Revision is returning to a drawing or idea and changing it on purpose based on what you learned. A strong SI shows all three across the work; a weak one shows 15 finished, unrelated drawings with none of the visible testing between them.
The drawing levers: mark, line, light, composition
Experiments need variables, and in drawing your key variables are mark-making (hatching, scribble, stipple, smudge, erasure), line quality (weight, speed, continuity, character), light and shadow / value (how you build form and drama through dark and light), and composition (how the marks are arranged in the format). To experiment is to hold your inquiry steady and change one lever: What if line weight carries everything and I drop shading? What if I push value to near-total black? What if the composition crops brutally? Naming the lever turns "try something new" into a real experiment a reader can recognize.
Revision is a decision, not a repair
Beginning students think revision means fixing a smudge or a wrong proportion. In an SI, revision is choosing to change a drawing because your inquiry demanded it — reworking a piece in charcoal instead of pencil to test whether softer marks read as more atmospheric, or recomposing to force the eye toward one shadow. The most convincing revisions read as pairs or sequences — an earlier drawing and its reworking — so a reader can see the decision between them. Photograph both; the "before" is evidence of investigation, and in drawing, keeping preparatory studies is easy, honest proof of it.
A student’s inquiry is "How can heavy shadow make an ordinary object feel menacing?" Their first drawings render the object clearly but feel flat and harmless. Design an experiment-and-revision step using the drawing levers.
- 1.Diagnose which lever fights the inquiry: even, gentle value across the object describes it plainly, and a centered, balanced composition keeps it calm — neither builds menace.
- 2.Choose levers to change deliberately: push light and shadow to extreme contrast (deep cast shadows, hidden edges) and recompose so the object looms and the shadow dominates the format.
- 3.Run the experiment: redraw the object lit from below with most of it swallowed in dark, using dense mark-making in the shadows.
- 4.Compare the pair and record the decision: does the extreme value and looming composition make it menacing? That comparison is the revision evidence.
Some of your 15 images should show studies, experiments, and reworked drawings — not just polished finals. Deliberately photograph preparatory sketches and before/after pairs so the investigation is visible. A portfolio of 15 finished, unrelated drawings reads as a sketchbook show, not an inquiry, and loses the investigation row.
