The Arts of the Book & Luxury Object

The word made beautiful: Qur’anic calligraphy

Because Islam reveres the Qur’an as the literal word of God, calligraphy became the highest art form. A Folio from a Qur’an (Arab, North Africa or Near East, 8th–9th century, ink, color, and gold on parchment) is written in the angular, majestic Kufic script, the horizontal letters spaced with careful rhythm and punctuated by gold ornament. Here writing is not merely legible but visually sacred — the shape of the divine words is itself an object of contemplation. The illuminated Qur’an set a standard of beauty and precision that radiated across the Islamic world for centuries.

Persian painting: the Shahnama illustrated

Persian courts prized lavishly illustrated books, above all the Shahnama (Book of Kings). Bahram Gur Fights the Karg, from the Great Il-Khanid Shahnama (c. 1330–1340, ink, color, gold on paper), stages a heroic combat with vivid color and dramatic action. A century later, The Court of Gayumars, attributed to Sultan Muhammad, from Shah Tahmasp’s Shahnama (c. 1522–1525, ink, opaque watercolor, gold on paper), is a jewel of the Persian miniature: tiny courtiers in leopard skins ring a mythical first king enthroned on a mountain, set against swirling rocks and a gold sky, every inch alive with minute detail and no single vanishing point — space is stacked and decorative rather than illusionistic.

Luxury in metal and wool

Islamic artists lavished skill on portable luxury objects. The Basin (Baptistère de Saint Louis) by Muhammad ibn al-Zayn (c. 1320–1340, brass inlaid with gold and silver) is a Mamluk masterpiece of inlaid metalwork, its surface teeming with courtly figures, hunters, and animals; ironically it later served as a French royal baptismal font. The Ardabil Carpet by Maqsud of Kashan (1539–1540, knotted wool and silk) is one of a pair of enormous Safavid carpets: around a central medallion — read as a heavenly dome reflected in a pool — radiate mosque lamps and dense arabesques, its millions of knots and inscribed signature marking the height of imperial workshop art.

Worked example

You examine a small, brilliantly colored painting on paper: dozens of miniature figures in patterned robes encircle an enthroned ruler seated high on a rocky outcrop, the rocks rendered as swirling, almost animate forms under a gold sky, with no consistent vanishing point and delicate detail throughout. Attribute the tradition and period, and explain the visual evidence.

  1. 1.Identify the format: a small, densely detailed painting on paper made to illustrate a book is a Persian miniature.
  2. 2.Read the space: stacked, decorative, non-perspectival space with a gold sky is characteristic of Persian manuscript painting, which prizes surface pattern over illusionistic depth.
  3. 3.Read the subject: an enthroned mythical first king surrounded by his court, in a mountainous fantasy setting, matches the opening of the Shahnama.
  4. 4.Attribute: this is The Court of Gayumars, attributed to Sultan Muhammad, from Shah Tahmasp’s Shahnama, Safavid Iran (c. 1522–1525).
Answer: A Persian (Safavid) miniature, The Court of Gayumars attributed to Sultan Muhammad, from Shah Tahmasp’s Shahnama (c. 1522–1525). The tiny scale, jewel-like detail, gold sky, swirling rocks, and stacked, non-illusionistic space are hallmarks of Persian book painting, made for a royal patron to celebrate Iran’s legendary kings.

Why did calligraphy become the most esteemed art form across the Islamic world?

Tip

Persian miniatures reward close looking. Note their stacked (non-perspectival) space, gold skies, tiny jewel-like figures, and all-over pattern — the goal is a richly decorated surface, not a window onto illusionistic depth. Contrast this with the linear perspective of the European Renaissance to make a sharp cross-cultural comparison.

The Ardabil Carpet centers on a large medallion surrounded by radiating arabesques and two hanging mosque lamps, and it bears the signature of Maqsud of Kashan. Which statement best captures its significance?
