Adjectives, 很, & Aesthetic Description
- Form adjectival predicates correctly using 很 (hěn) without a “to be” verb
- Use 的 (de) to attach descriptions to nouns
- Discuss Chinese aesthetic ideals such as balance and calligraphy
Adjectives are like verbs
In Mandarin, an adjective can act as the whole predicate — you do not use 是 (shì, “to be”) with it. Instead, a “degree word” like 很 (hěn) connects the subject to the adjective: 这幅画很美 (Zhè fú huà hěn měi, “this painting is [very] beautiful”). Here 很 is often just a neutral link, not a strong “very.” Saying 这幅画美 alone sounds incomplete or comparative, and adding 是 (这幅画是美) is simply wrong. The default frame is subject + 很 + adjective.
Attaching descriptions with 的
To put an adjective before a noun as a modifier, link them with 的 (de): 美丽的风景 (měilì de fēngjǐng, “beautiful scenery”), 古老的建筑 (gǔlǎo de jiànzhù, “ancient architecture”). 的 marks the whole preceding phrase as a description of the noun that follows. Short, common one-syllable adjectives can drop 的 in fixed pairs — 好人 (hǎo rén, “good person”) — but for aesthetic description you will almost always want the fuller 的 pattern to modify richly.
Aesthetic ideals and vocabulary
Chinese aesthetics prize balance and harmony (和谐, héxié), symmetry (对称, duìchèn), and expressive restraint. Calligraphy (书法, shūfǎ) is treated as a fine art, where the beauty of a brushstroke reflects the writer’s character. Useful descriptive words: 优雅 (yōuyǎ, “elegant”), 传统 (chuántǒng, “traditional”), 简单 (jiǎndān, “simple”). To praise a work you might say 这幅书法很优雅 (Zhè fú shūfǎ hěn yōuyǎ, “this calligraphy is very elegant”), combining the 很 + adjective frame with cultural vocabulary.
You want to say “This traditional painting is very beautiful” at an art exhibition. Build the sentence, deciding where 的 and 很 belong.
- 1.Modify the noun 画 (huà, “painting”) with “traditional”: 传统 (chuántǒng) + 的 + 画 → 传统的画 (chuántǒng de huà).
- 2.Add the demonstrative and measure word for “this [painting]”: 这幅 (zhè fú) → 这幅传统的画 (zhè fú chuántǒng de huà).
- 3.For the predicate “is very beautiful,” use 很 + adjective with no 是: 很美 (hěn měi).
- 4.Assemble: subject (这幅传统的画) + 很美.
Which sentence correctly says “This painting is beautiful”?
Never insert 是 before a plain adjective. English “is beautiful” tempts learners into 这幅画是美, but Mandarin uses 很 (or another degree word) as the link: 这幅画很美. Reserve 是 for linking two nouns (我是学生, Wǒ shì xuésheng, “I am a student”).
In the phrase 古老的建筑 (gǔlǎo de jiànzhù, “ancient architecture”), what is the function of 的 (de)?
For the AP cultural comparison, weave in aesthetic vocabulary and a concrete example — 中国画讲究和谐与留白 (Zhōngguó huà jiǎngjiu héxié yǔ liúbái, “Chinese painting values harmony and blank space”). Naming a specific ideal like 留白 (liúbái, “leaving blank space”) shows genuine cultural knowledge.
