Talking About Technology & China’s Inventions

You’ll be able to

Measure words for devices

Technology vocabulary comes with its own classifiers. 台 (tái) counts machines and appliances: 一台电脑 (yì tái diànnǎo, “one computer”), 一台手机 is also heard, though phones often take 部 (bù) or the all-purpose 个 (gè). 辆 (liàng) counts vehicles: 一辆车 (yí liàng chē, “one car”). 架 (jià) counts aircraft: 一架飞机 (yí jià fēijī, “one airplane”). Choosing the fitting measure word — 台 for a computer, not 个 — signals control of the language when you write about science and technology.

Comparing with 比 (bǐ)

To compare two things, Mandarin uses A 比 B + adjective: 新手机比旧手机快 (Xīn shǒujī bǐ jiù shǒujī kuài, “the new phone is faster than the old phone”). Note that you do not add 很 here — the comparison itself supplies the degree. To say by how much, add the amount after the adjective: 快很多 (kuài hěn duō, “much faster”), 快一点儿 (kuài yìdiǎnr, “a little faster”). For “not as … as,” use 没有 (méiyǒu): 旧手机没有新手机快 (Jiù shǒujī méiyǒu xīn shǒujī kuài, “the old phone is not as fast as the new one”).

The Four Great Inventions

Chinese cultural literacy includes the Four Great Inventions (四大发明, sì dà fāmíng) of ancient China: papermaking (造纸术, zàozhǐshù), printing (印刷术, yìnshuāshù), gunpowder (火药, huǒyào), and the compass (指南针, zhǐnánzhēn). These technologies spread along the Silk Road and shaped world history. Being able to name them — and say something like 中国古代有四大发明 (Zhōngguó gǔdài yǒu sì dà fāmíng, “ancient China had the Four Great Inventions”) — gives you ready cultural content for the science-and-technology theme.

Worked example

You want to say “This computer is much faster than that one” while pointing at two machines. Build the comparison, using the right measure word and comparison structure.

  1. 1.Count computers with 台 (tái): 这台电脑 (zhè tái diànnǎo, “this computer”), 那台 (nà tái, “that one”).
  2. 2.Set up the comparison with 比: 这台电脑比那台 … (Zhè tái diànnǎo bǐ nà tái …).
  3. 3.Add the adjective without 很: … 快 (kuài, “fast”).
  4. 4.Express “by much” with 很多 after the adjective: … 快很多 (kuài hěn duō).
Answer: 这台电脑比那台快很多。(Zhè tái diànnǎo bǐ nà tái kuài hěn duō.) “This computer is much faster than that one.” 台 is the classifier for machines, 比 sets up the comparison with no 很 before 快, and 很多 after the adjective adds “by a lot.”
Checkpoint

Which sentence correctly says “The new phone is faster than the old phone”?

Tip

A reliable memory hook: 比 kills 很. Whenever you use 比 for a comparison, drop 很 before the adjective. Say 比⋯⋯快 (bǐ … kuài), never 比⋯⋯很快. To intensify, put the amount after the adjective: 快得多 (kuài de duō) or 快很多 (kuài hěn duō).

Checkpoint

Which set correctly lists the Four Great Inventions (四大发明) of ancient China?

On the exam

For the cultural presentation, connect an ancient invention to its global impact: 印刷术让知识传播得更快 (Yìnshuāshù ràng zhīshi chuánbō de gèng kuài, “printing let knowledge spread faster”). Linking Chinese technology to world history earns strong cultural-comparison marks.
