The 把 (bǎ) Disposal Construction
- Form 把 sentences to show what is done *to* a specific object
- Explain why the 把 object must be definite and the verb must be “complex”
- Use 把 to describe concrete actions on the environment
Doing something to an object
The 把 (bǎ) construction moves the object before the verb to stress what is done to it — how it is handled, changed, or disposed of. The pattern is subject + 把 + object + verb + result: 请把垃圾扔进垃圾桶 (Qǐng bǎ lājī rēng jìn lājītǒng, “Please throw the trash into the bin”). Instead of the plain SVO 扔垃圾 (“throw trash”), 把 foregrounds the specific trash and what happens to it. This makes 把 ideal for talking about concrete environmental actions — sorting, recycling, cleaning up.
Two rules that make 把 work
把 has two firm requirements. First, the object must be definite — a specific, known thing, not just “some trash in general.” You say 把这个瓶子 (bǎ zhège píngzi, “this bottle”), not 把一个瓶子 for a random one. Second, the verb cannot stand bare; it needs a “complement” showing a result, direction, or change: 扔进去 (rēng jìnqù, “throw in”), 关上 (guānshàng, “close [shut]”), 用完 (yòngwán, “use up”). A lone verb like 把水喝 is wrong — it must become 把水喝完 (bǎ shuǐ hēwán, “finish drinking the water”).
Why 把 suits environmental topics
Global-challenge writing is full of “do X to Y” actions, exactly what 把 expresses. 我们要把塑料回收 (Wǒmen yào bǎ sùliào huíshōu, “we should recycle the plastic”); 把资源节约下来 (bǎ zīyuán jiéyuē xiàlai, “conserve resources”); 别把水浪费了 (bié bǎ shuǐ làngfèi le, “don’t waste the water”). Each takes a definite object and a verb-plus-result. Command forms with 请 (qǐng, “please”) or 别 (bié, “don’t”) plus 把 are especially natural for public-service messages about the environment.
You want to write a recycling reminder: “Please put the bottles into the recycling bin.” Build it with 把, and check that both 把 rules are satisfied.
- 1.Identify the definite object being acted on: 这些瓶子 (zhèxiē píngzi, “these bottles”) — specific, so it qualifies for 把.
- 2.Set up the polite command: 请把这些瓶子 … (Qǐng bǎ zhèxiē píngzi …).
- 3.Choose a verb with a directional complement so it is not bare: 放进 (fàng jìn, “put into”).
- 4.Add the destination: … 放进回收箱 (fàng jìn huíshōuxiāng, “into the recycling bin”).
Why is the sentence 我把水喝 (Wǒ bǎ shuǐ hē) incorrect?
Two traps with 把: the object must be definite (把这本书, not 把一本书 for a random book), and the verb must not be bare — add 了, a complement, or a direction. If you cannot say what result the action produces, the sentence probably should not use 把.
Which sentence correctly uses 把 to mean “Please turn off the lights (to save electricity)”?
For persuasive environmental writing, 把 command sentences pack a punch: 请大家把垃圾分类 (Qǐng dàjiā bǎ lājī fēnlèi, “everyone, please sort the trash”). Just remember to give the verb a result and keep the object specific, and you will produce natural, high-level appeals.
