Age structure predicts the future
An age-structure diagram stacks the population by age and sex, and its shape forecasts growth without any further calculation. A wide base narrowing steeply — a pyramid — means many young people entering reproductive age, so the population will grow even if fertility falls immediately, a phenomenon called population momentum. A column means each cohort roughly replaces itself and the population is stable. An inverted shape, narrow at the bottom, means the population is shrinking and aging. The exam asks you to predict from shape and to name a consequence: a pyramid predicts pressure on schools, jobs and food; a column with a bulge at the top predicts pressure on pensions and health care and a shrinking workforce.
The demographic transition, with causes
Four stages, and the exam wants the mechanism at each. Stage 1: high birth rates and high death rates, so population is roughly stable — pre-industrial. Stage 2: death rates fall through sanitation, clean water, vaccination and better nutrition while birth rates stay high, producing rapid growth. This is the stage that generates a population explosion, and the cause is fewer deaths, not more births — the single most common misunderstanding on this topic. Stage 3: birth rates fall as children survive, as urbanization raises the cost of raising them, and above all as women gain education and employment. Stage 4: both rates low, population stable or declining, with an aging structure. Different countries sit at different stages simultaneously, which drives global migration patterns.
Total fertility rate and replacement
Total fertility rate (TFR) is the average number of children a woman has in her lifetime. Replacement level is about 2.1 — two to replace the parents plus a fraction to account for children who do not survive to reproduce, which is why replacement is higher than 2.0 and higher still where child mortality is high. A TFR above 2.1 means eventual growth, below means eventual decline. Two qualifications that raise an answer above the basic statement: momentum means a country with TFR at exactly 2.1 can still grow for decades if its age structure is young, and the strongest single predictor of falling TFR across countries is female education and access to family planning, which is why development policy and population policy are the same conversation.
A country has a TFR of 1.6 and an age structure with a narrow base and a wide band at ages 50–70. Predict its population trajectory and name two consequences.
