Les pronoms y et en : talking about technology
- Interpret French texts about technology and digital life
- Use the pronoun y to replace à + a thing or a place, and en to replace de + a thing or a quantity
- Recognize high-frequency vocabulary for science and technology
The pronoun y
The pronoun y replaces à + a thing or a place, and it means there or to/about it. Place: Tu vas au laboratoire? — Oui, j’y vais (Are you going to the lab? — Yes, I’m going there). Thing introduced by à: Elle pense à son projet → Elle y pense (She thinks about it). Like other object pronouns, y sits before the conjugated verb. Do not use y for people — for à + a person you use lui/leur instead.
The pronoun en
The pronoun en replaces de + a thing, a partitive (du, de la, des), or a quantity, meaning some, any, of it/them. Partitive: Tu utilises du logiciel libre? — Oui, j’en utilize (Do you use open-source software? — Yes, I use some). Quantity: Combien d’ordinateurs as-tu? — J’en ai deux (How many computers do you have? — I have two [of them]). With a number or expression of quantity, en stands in for the noun while the number stays: j’en ai deux. Verbs built with de (parler de, avoir besoin de) also use en: J’ai besoin de temps → J’en ai besoin.
Vocabulary of science and technology
Core terms: la technologie, le numérique (the digital / digital world), un ordinateur (computer), un logiciel (software), la recherche (research), une découverte (a discovery), un chercheur / une chercheuse (researcher), les données (data), l’intelligence artificielle (l’IA). France and the wider Francophone world are active in tech and science — la French Tech startup ecosystem, medical research, and space work through le CNES and Europe’s Ariane rockets. Note the borrowed-then-adapted words (le numérique over digital) reflecting efforts to keep French vocabulary current.
Interpret: « Léa s’intéresse à l’intelligence artificielle. Elle y consacre tout son temps libre et elle en parle sans arrêt à ses amis. » — Explain what y and en replace.
- 1.Gloss: "Léa is interested in artificial intelligence. She devotes all her free time to it and she talks about it nonstop to her friends."
- 2.First sentence establishes the topic: à l’intelligence artificielle (à + a thing).
- 3.y consacre: y replaces à l’intelligence artificielle — "she devotes her time to it."
- 4.en parle: parler de means "to talk about," so en replaces de l’intelligence artificielle — "she talks about it."
- 5.Interpret: the pronouns keep the passage from repeating the topic, and the content shows a young person deeply engaged with AI, a leading theme in Francophone discussions of the numérique.
Replace the underlined phrase: « Nous avons besoin de nouvelles données. » → « Nous _____ avons besoin. »
Match the pronoun to the preposition: à + thing → y, de + thing → en. For a person, switch to lui/leur (à) — never y for people. Reading a verb’s preposition (penser à, parler de, avoir besoin de) tells you which pronoun a text is using.
What does « y » replace in « Elle travaille dans ce laboratoire depuis un an. — Elle y travaille depuis un an. »?
On reading passages, y and en let authors avoid repetition — so to understand a pronoun, look back to the noun it stands for. Ask "à what?" for y and "de what?" for en, and reread the sentence with the noun restored.
