Location: absolute vs. relative

Everything in geography starts with location. Absolute location pins a spot exactly — latitude and longitude, or a street address (New Orleans sits at 30°N, 90°W). Relative location describes where something is in relation to other things (New Orleans is near the mouth of the Mississippi, downriver from Baton Rouge). The same logic applies to distance and direction: absolute distance is measured in fixed units (500 km), relative distance in time, cost, or effort (“a two-hour drive”). Relative measures often matter more to human behavior than absolute ones.

Space, place, and pattern

Space is the gap between things; how phenomena are arranged in it defines a spatial pattern — clustered, dispersed, linear, or random. Place adds meaning: it is a location’s unique physical and human character, its “sense of place.” Toponyms (place names) and the site (a place’s physical attributes, like a natural harbor) versus situation (its position relative to other places, like being on a trade route) all shape how a place develops. The friction of distance and its decay

Distance imposes a cost — the friction of distance — so interaction weakens as separation grows. This is distance decay: the farther apart two places are, the less they interact. But technology can shrink the effect. Time-space compression is the accelerating reduction in the time and cost it takes places to connect: air travel, the internet, and container shipping have made distant places feel “closer,” flattening the friction of distance for goods, people, and ideas even though the physical kilometers are unchanged.

Worked example

A new bakery’s customers thin out sharply beyond a few blocks, yet it ships specialty cakes nationwide by overnight courier. Explain the local pattern with distance decay and the national reach with time-space compression.

  1. 1.Walk-in customers face the friction of distance: each extra block adds travel time and effort, so the number of visitors drops as distance from the shop increases — classic distance decay.
  2. 2.For everyday bread, that friction dominates and the trade area stays small and local.
  3. 3.Overnight shipping and online ordering collapse the time and cost of reaching distant buyers, so specialty cakes can move nationwide despite the kilometers.
  4. 4.This shrinking of the effective distance for shipped goods is time-space compression at work.
Answer: Local foot traffic obeys distance decay — interaction falls with distance because of the friction of distance — while nationwide cake shipping reflects time-space compression, where technology reduces the time and cost of connecting distant places.

Watch out

Do not confuse site with situation. Site = a place’s own physical characteristics (harbor, elevation, soil). Situation = its location relative to other places (on a trade route, between two rivers). Mixing them up is a common FRQ error.
