I pronomi ci e ne : talking about technology

You’ll be able to

The pronoun ci

The pronoun ci replaces a + a thing or a place, and it means there or to/about it. Place: Vai in laboratorio? — Sì, ci vado (Are you going to the lab? — Yes, I’m going there). Thing introduced by a: Pensi al tuo progetto? — Sì, ci penso (Do you think about it? — Yes, I think about it). Like other object pronouns, ci sits before the conjugated verb. It also appears in the everyday c’è / ci sono (there is / there are).

The pronoun ne

The pronoun ne replaces di + a thing or a quantity, meaning some, of it/them, about it. Quantity: Quanti computer hai? — Ne ho due (How many computers do you have? — I have two [of them]). Partitive: Usi dei software liberi? — Sì, ne uso (Do you use open-source software? — Yes, I use some). Verbs built with di (parlare di, avere bisogno di) also use ne: Ho bisogno di tempoNe ho bisogno (I need it). In the passato prossimo with a quantity, the participle agrees: Ne ho comprati due (I bought two of them).

Vocabulary of science and technology

Core terms: la tecnologia, il digitale (the digital / digital world), il computer, il software, la ricerca (research), una scoperta (a discovery), un ricercatore / una ricercatrice (researcher), i dati (data), l’intelligenza artificiale (l’IA), la rete (the network / internet). Italy has a strong scientific tradition — from Galileo Galilei to Nobel laureates like Rita Levi-Montalcini — and lively public debate about how technology should serve society while respecting la privacy and l’etica.

Worked example

Interpret: « Sara si interessa all’intelligenza artificiale. Ci dedica tutto il tempo libero e ne parla continuamente con gli amici. » — Explain what ci and ne replace.

  1. 1.Gloss: "Sara is interested in artificial intelligence. She devotes all her free time to it and talks about it constantly with her friends."
  2. 2.The topic is set: all’intelligenza artificiale (a + a thing).
  3. 3.ci dedica: ci replaces all’intelligenza artificiale — "she devotes her time to it."
  4. 4.ne parla: parlare di means "to talk about," so ne replaces di intelligenza artificiale — "she talks about it."
  5. 5.Interpret: the pronouns avoid repeating the topic, and the content shows a young person deeply engaged with AI, a leading theme in Italian discussions of il digitale.
Answer: ci replaces all’intelligenza artificiale (the thing she devotes time to), and ne replaces di intelligenza artificiale (what she talks about, since parlare takes di). Both avoid repetition while portraying intense engagement with AI.
Checkpoint

Replace the underlined phrase: « Abbiamo bisogno di nuovi dati. » → « _____ abbiamo bisogno. »

Watch out

Match the pronoun to the preposition: a + thing / place → ci, di + thing / quantity → ne. Reading a verb’s preposition (pensare a, parlare di, avere bisogno di) tells you which pronoun a text is using — and what noun to look back to.

Checkpoint

What does « ci » replace in « Lavora in questo laboratorio da un anno. — Ci lavora da un anno. »?

On the exam

On reading passages, ci and ne let authors avoid repetition — so to understand a pronoun, look back to the noun it stands for. Ask "a what?" for ci and "di what?" for ne, and reread the sentence with the noun restored.
