Vocabulary of the environment
Global-challenge texts rely on precise terms. l’ambiente (the environment), il riscaldamento globale (global warming), il cambiamento climatico (climate change), l’inquinamento (pollution), i rifiuti (waste), lo sviluppo sostenibile (sustainable development), le energie rinnovabili (renewable energy), il riciclo / la raccolta differenziata (recycling / sorted waste collection), proteggere (to protect), sprecare (to waste). In Italy, la raccolta differenziata is a widespread daily civic practice, and environmental protection is increasingly treated as a shared responsibility across the Italian and European public sphere.
The congiuntivo of necessity and obligation
Calls to action lean heavily on the congiuntivo after expressions of necessity: bisogna che (it is necessary that), è necessario che, è urgente che, occorre che (it is required that), è ora che (it is time that). Bisogna che agiamo subito (We must act now). Because these clauses urge what should happen rather than state a fact, the verb takes the subjunctive. You will also meet purpose conjunctions that trigger it: affinché / perché (so that), a patto che / purché (provided that).
Reading arguments and solutions
Interpretive texts about the environment usually move from problem to call for action. Watch for the structure: a description of a threat (often present or passato prossimo), followed by proposed solutions framed with necessity (bisogna che…) or the conditional (si potrebbe…, we could…). Signal words like tuttavia (however), quindi / perciò (therefore), and per questo (this is why) mark the logical turns. Tracking this problem-then-solution shape helps you identify a text’s main argument.
Interpret: « Il pianeta si riscalda rapidamente. È urgente che riduciamo i rifiuti e che ognuno faccia uno sforzo per proteggere l’ambiente. » — Analyze the mood and the argument.
- 1.Gloss: "The planet is warming rapidly. It is urgent that we reduce waste and that everyone make an effort to protect the environment."
- 2.The first sentence states the problem in the present (si riscalda).
- 3.È urgente che triggers the congiuntivo: riduciamo (ridurre) and faccia (fare) are subjunctive forms.
- 4.Note the call to shared responsibility: ognuno faccia uno sforzo — "everyone" must contribute.
- 5.Interpret: the text follows a problem-to-action structure and frames environmental protection as an urgent collective duty, a common Italian/European civic perspective.
Which sentence correctly uses the congiuntivo after an expression of necessity?
Do not confuse bisogna + infinitive with bisogna che + congiuntivo. Bisogna agire (one must act — general, no subject) uses the infinitive, but bisogna che agiamo (we must act — specific subject) requires the subjunctive after che.
An Italian text moves from describing rising pollution to « È ora che ognuno agisca ». The phrase signals that the author is:
On persuasive texts, locate the necessity triggers (bisogna che, è urgente che, è ora che) to find the author’s proposed action. These subjunctive clauses usually contain the thesis — what the writer wants the reader to do.
