Theories of intelligence

Psychologists disagree on whether intelligence is one thing or many. Spearman proposed a general intelligence (g) underlying all abilities. Gardner countered with multiple intelligences (linguistic, logical, spatial, musical, and more), and Sternberg’s triarchic theory names analytical, creative, and practical intelligence. Emotional intelligence (Salovey and Mayer) is the ability to perceive, understand, and manage emotions. A key distinction is fluid intelligence (reasoning speed and abstract problem solving, which declines with age) versus crystallized intelligence (accumulated knowledge and skills, which holds or grows).

Measuring intelligence well

A good test meets three standards. Standardization means administering and scoring it uniformly and comparing scores to a pretested norm group (whose scores form the bell-shaped normal curve). Reliability means the test yields consistent results (across time, or across halves). Validity means the test measures what it claims to and predicts what it should (predictive validity). Early history includes Binet and Simon’s mental-age test and Terman’s Stanford-Binet, which produced the IQ score. A test can be reliable without being valid — consistent but consistently measuring the wrong thing.

Language and its development

Children acquire language on a striking universal timetable: babbling (around 4 months, all sounds), the one-word stage (about age 1), the two-word/telegraphic stage (about age 2, "want cookie"), then rapid growth into full sentences. B. F. Skinner argued language is learned through association and reinforcement, but Noam Chomsky countered that children acquire grammar too fast and creatively for imitation alone, proposing an inborn language acquisition device and a critical period for learning language. Errors like overgeneralization ("goed," "foots") reveal that children infer rules rather than merely copying.

Worked example

A newly designed intelligence test gives students nearly the same score when they retake it a month later, but the scores show no relationship to school performance, later job success, or any other measure of ability. Evaluate this test using the concepts of reliability and validity.

  1. 1.Assess consistency: because retaking the test yields nearly the same score each time, the test is reliable (consistent over time).
  2. 2.Assess accuracy: the scores do not predict school or job performance or relate to other ability measures, so the test lacks validity — it does not measure what it claims.
  3. 3.Combine the judgments: a test can be reliable without being valid; here it is consistent but consistently measuring the wrong thing.
  4. 4.Conclude: the test should not be used to assess intelligence, because reliability alone is not enough — validity is required for meaningful conclusions.
Answer: The test is reliable (it produces consistent scores over time) but not valid (its scores predict nothing it should). Because a test can be reliable without being valid, this one is useless for measuring intelligence — validity, not just consistency, is essential.

Watch out

Do not confuse reliability (consistent results) with validity (measures what it should). A bathroom scale that always reads five pounds heavy is perfectly reliable but not valid. Validity requires reliability, but reliability alone never guarantees validity.
