Choosing a Method: Qualitative, Quantitative & Mixed

Three families of method

Research methods fall into three broad families. Quantitative methods collect and analyze numerical data — surveys with rating scales, experiments, measurements — to find patterns, test relationships, and generalize to a population. Qualitative methods collect and analyze non-numerical data — interviews, open-ended responses, observations, texts — to understand meaning, experience, and process in depth. Mixed methods deliberately combine the two, using one to complement the other (for example, a survey to find how many, plus interviews to understand why).

The question chooses the method

The single most important principle: let the research question dictate the method, not the other way around. Questions about how much, how many, whether X relates to Y, or does an intervention change an outcome call for quantitative approaches. Questions about how people experience something, what meaning they make, or why a process unfolds call for qualitative approaches. Questions with both a "how many" and a "why" component call for mixed methods. Choosing a method because it feels easier or more familiar, then forcing your question to fit it, produces a study that cannot actually answer what you asked.

Trade-offs and feasibility

Each family carries trade-offs. Quantitative work can generalize and quantify but can miss nuance and context. Qualitative work captures depth and meaning but usually cannot generalize and is labor-intensive to analyze. Mixed methods offer the strengths of both but demand more time and two sets of skills. Beyond fit, weigh feasibility: can you reach enough participants for a survey to mean anything? Do you have time to transcribe and code twenty interviews? A method that fits your question but not your constraints is still the wrong method for an AP Research timeline.

Worked example

For each question, name the most appropriate method family and why: (a) "Does a 10-minute mindfulness exercise reduce students’ self-reported test anxiety?" (b) "How do first-generation college students describe their sense of belonging on campus?" (c) "How widespread is burnout among nurses, and what do they say causes it?"

  1. 1.For (a): the question tests whether an intervention changes a measurable outcome (anxiety scores) — this calls for a quantitative experiment.
  2. 2.For (b): the question seeks lived experience and meaning ("describe their sense of belonging") — this calls for a qualitative interview study.
  3. 3.For (c): "how widespread" needs numbers (quantitative), while "what do they say causes it" needs their own words (qualitative) — this calls for mixed methods.
  4. 4.In each case, the wording of the question — measure, describe, or both — selects the method.
Answer: (a) is quantitative (an experiment testing whether an intervention changes a measured outcome); (b) is qualitative (interviews to capture lived experience and meaning); (c) is mixed methods (numbers for prevalence plus narratives for causes). The method follows directly from what each question asks, not from the researcher’s preference.

Watch out

Do not pick a method first and bend your question to fit it. Choosing a survey because it feels easy, then reframing a "why do they feel this way" question as a rating scale, guarantees your data cannot answer what you actually wanted to know.

The AP Research rubric rewards alignment: your method must clearly follow from your question, and your analysis from your method. State explicitly why your chosen approach fits the question — reviewers penalize a mismatch between what you asked and how you tried to answer it.
