The anatomy of an argument

An argument is not a fight or a mere opinion — it is a structured case made of three parts. A claim is the arguable position the author wants you to accept. Evidence is the factual support offered for the claim — data, examples, quotations, observations. Reasoning is the connective thinking that explains why the evidence supports the claim. Learning to see these three parts separately is the core analytical skill of AP Seminar, because you cannot evaluate an argument until you can name its pieces.

Claim vs. fact vs. opinion

A claim occupies the middle ground between fact and opinion. A fact ("the city’s population grew 12% last decade") can be verified and is not itself arguable. A bare opinion ("I dislike cities") is personal preference that needs no defense. A claim ("the city’s growth has outpaced its housing supply, worsening inequality") is arguable — reasonable people could disagree — yet it can be supported with evidence. Seminar arguments are built from claims, not from unsupported opinions or from facts that no one contests.

Why evidence needs reasoning

Students often assume that piling up evidence proves a point. It does not. A statistic sitting alone is inert; the author must supply the reasoning — sometimes called the warrant — that links it to the claim. Consider "Ice cream sales and drowning deaths both rise in summer." That evidence does not support "ice cream causes drowning"; the reasoning is missing (and would be wrong — a hidden third factor, hot weather, drives both). Reasoning is where arguments are won or lost, and where you should look hardest when evaluating one.

Worked example

Break this passage into claim, evidence, and reasoning: "Cities should invest in bike lanes. In Copenhagen, where nearly half of commutes are by bicycle, traffic deaths per capita are among the lowest in Europe. Separated lanes physically remove cyclists from car traffic, so the collisions that cause most cycling fatalities simply cannot happen."

  1. 1.Find the arguable position the author wants accepted — that is the claim: "Cities should invest in bike lanes."
  2. 2.Find the factual support offered — that is the evidence: Copenhagen’s high cycling rate paired with very low per-capita traffic deaths.
  3. 3.Find the connective thinking that links evidence to claim — that is the reasoning: separated lanes remove cyclists from cars, so the collisions causing most fatalities cannot occur.
  4. 4.Check the link: the reasoning gives a causal mechanism (physical separation) explaining why the Copenhagen numbers support the claim, not just a coincidence.
Answer: Claim: cities should invest in bike lanes. Evidence: Copenhagen’s high cycling rate and very low per-capita traffic deaths. Reasoning: separated lanes physically remove cyclists from cars, preventing the collisions that cause most fatalities — the mechanism that connects the evidence to the claim.

Watch out

Evidence does not speak for itself. When you analyze — or build — an argument, always ask, "What reasoning connects this evidence to the claim?" A correlation, a quotation, or a statistic proves nothing until the reasoning that links it to the point is made explicit and holds up.

The Seminar rubrics repeatedly separate "identify" from "explain." Do not merely quote evidence — state the claim it supports and articulate the reasoning. Papers that drop quotations without explaining their significance stall in the lower rubric rows.
