What a line of reasoning is
A single argument has claim, evidence, and reasoning; a whole text has a line of reasoning — the ordered progression of claims that leads an audience, step by step, from the opening to the conclusion. Think of it as the argument’s spine. Each sub-claim (also called a supporting claim) advances the case and is itself backed by evidence and reasoning, and the sub-claims are arranged so that each one prepares the ground for the next. A strong line of reasoning reads as a path; a weak one reads as a pile.
Sequence and coherence
The power of a line of reasoning comes from order and connection. Ideas must appear in a sequence where each builds on what came before, and transitions signal the relationships — because, therefore, however, as a result. A reader should never wonder "why are we talking about this now?" When you analyze a text, trace its spine: identify the thesis, then list the sub-claims in order and check that each genuinely moves the argument toward that thesis rather than sitting beside it.
Finding the break
Lines of reasoning fail in predictable ways. There may be a gap — a step the author skipped, so the conclusion does not actually follow from what came before. There may be a non-sequitur, where a claim simply does not connect to the previous one. Or the order may be jumbled, forcing the reader to do the author’s organizing. Diagnosing where a line of reasoning breaks — not just that the argument feels unconvincing — is a high-level analytical skill the exam rewards.
A student’s essay argues: "Schools should start later." It offers three paragraphs: (1) teens are biologically wired to sleep later, (2) my friends are always tired, (3) later start times raise test scores in districts that adopted them. Evaluate the line of reasoning.

- 2.List the sub-claims in order: biological sleep timing, personal anecdote about friends, and outcomes data from real districts.
- 3.Test each link to the thesis: sub-claim 1 (biology) and sub-claim 3 (outcomes) both directly support a later start with evidence and reasoning.
- 4.Spot the weak link: sub-claim 2 is a personal anecdote, not generalizable evidence, and it interrupts the logical flow between biology and outcomes.
- 5.Repair the sequence: cut or replace the anecdote with representative data, and order the claims as cause (biology) → mechanism → measured effect (outcomes).
What best describes a "line of reasoning" in an argument?
To test a line of reasoning, write each sub-claim on its own line in order and read only those lines. If they tell a coherent story that arrives at the thesis, the spine is sound; if you hit a "wait, how did we get here?", you have found the gap.
An essay jumps from "renewable energy is getting cheaper" directly to "therefore the government should ban all gasoline cars by next year," with nothing in between. What flaw in the line of reasoning is this?
