The demographic transition

World population went from roughly 1.6 billion in 1900 to over 8 billion, and the mechanism is a specific, teachable sequence called the demographic transition. Stage one: high birth rates and high death rates, so population is roughly stable. Stage two: death rates fall — through clean water, sanitation, vaccination, antibiotics, and better nutrition — while birth rates remain high, so population grows rapidly. This is the stage that produces the population explosion, and note the cause: not more births, but fewer deaths, which is the single most common misunderstanding on this topic. Stage three: birth rates fall as children survive, as urbanization raises the cost of raising them, and above all as women gain education and employment. Stage four: both rates low, population stable or declining — which is now the situation in Japan, much of Europe, South Korea and China, producing aging populations, shrinking workforces, and political conflict over immigration as the available remedy. Different regions sit at different stages, and that difference drives migration patterns.

The Green Revolution: a genuine success with real costs

Feeding that population required an agricultural transformation. The Green Revolution from the 1940s bred high-yielding dwarf varieties of wheat and rice — Norman Borlaug's work is the standard reference — and combined them with synthetic fertilizer, pesticides, irrigation and mechanization. Yields rose enough to avert the mass famines widely predicted for South Asia in the 1960s and 70s; India became a grain exporter. The costs were also real and belong in a complete answer: dependence on purchased inputs favored farmers with capital and drove smallholders into debt, groundwater depletion followed intensive irrigation, fertilizer runoff produced eutrophication and dead zones, pesticide use damaged health and biodiversity, and crop monoculture narrowed genetic diversity in ways that increase vulnerability to disease. The Haber-Bosch process for fixing nitrogen deserves separate mention as arguably the most consequential single industrial process of the twentieth century — a large share of the world's population is fed by it, and it is also a major source of greenhouse emissions and water pollution.

Environmental consequences and the difficulty of collective action

The environmental record is the period's least reversible change: greenhouse gas emissions and measured warming, deforestation in the Amazon and Southeast Asia, biodiversity loss at rates comparable to past mass extinctions, ocean acidification and fishery collapse, freshwater depletion including the near-disappearance of the Aral Sea, and plastic and chemical pollution now detectable everywhere. International response has a documented sequence and an instructive pattern of partial success. The Montreal Protocol (1987) on ozone-depleting chemicals worked, and understanding why is genuinely useful: few substances, few producers, available substitutes, and a clear and immediate identified harm. Climate agreements — the Kyoto Protocol (1997), the Paris Agreement (2015) — have been far weaker, because emissions come from every economic activity, benefits of restraint are shared while costs are local, and the states that emitted historically are not those emitting fastest now. That distributional dispute, and not scientific uncertainty, is why climate agreements are hard, and saying so precisely is the strongest available analysis.

Worked example

Explain ONE reason world population grew rapidly during the twentieth century.

  1. 1.Identify the mechanism: death rates fell sharply, especially infant and child mortality.
  2. 2.Give the causes of that fall: clean water and sanitation, vaccination, antibiotics, and improved nutrition supported by higher agricultural yields.
  3. 3.State the resulting gap: birth rates remained high for a generation or more after death rates dropped, and it is that gap between falling deaths and still-high births that produced rapid growth.
Answer: Death rates — above all infant and child mortality — fell sharply because of clean water, sanitation, vaccination, antibiotics and better nutrition, while birth rates stayed high for a generation or more; population grew rapidly because of that gap, so the cause was fewer deaths rather than more births.

The strongest single line on twentieth-century population is that it grew because death rates fell, not because birth rates rose. Most wrong answers on this topic assume the opposite, and stating the mechanism correctly signals that you understand the demographic transition rather than having memorized a curve.

Human rights, culture, and the argument over universality

The period also produced a genuinely new claim: that individuals hold rights independent of their citizenship. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) asserted it; the Genocide Convention, later the International Criminal Court (2002), and non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International built machinery around it. Concrete movements advanced under that framework: decolonization, the American civil rights movement, the campaign against apartheid in South Africa — where international boycott and divestment combined with sustained internal resistance to end the system by 1994 — women's rights movements worldwide, and later LGBT rights. Two objections deserve fair statement rather than dismissal. Enforcement remains selective, since powerful states are rarely held to the standard; and some governments argue that the framework encodes specifically Western liberal priorities and privileges individual over collective and economic rights — a critique advanced both by authoritarian governments protecting themselves and by serious postcolonial scholarship, and a good answer distinguishes those two uses. Meanwhile cultural exchange ran in every direction: not only American film and consumer brands but Japanese animation, Korean popular music, Latin American and African music, and global sport — which is why "cultural homogenization" is too simple a description of what actually happened.
