芸術 (げいじゅつ)
Art in the broad sense. 美術 is fine art specifically; 美術館 an art museum, 博物館 a general museum.
書道 (しょどう)
Calligraphy. 筆 brush, 墨 ink, 硯 inkstone, 半紙 paper. Studied in school, so it is a familiar and concrete presentation topic.
生け花 (いけばな)
Flower arrangement. Emphasizes line, space and asymmetry rather than mass; 華道 is the formal name of the discipline.
茶道 (さどう / ちゃどう)
Tea ceremony. 和敬清寂 — harmony, respect, purity, tranquility — are its four principles, and naming them lifts a presentation.
浮世絵 (うきよえ)
Woodblock prints of the Edo period. 葛飾北斎 Hokusai and 歌川広重 Hiroshige; they influenced European Impressionism, a good comparison point.
俳句 (はいく)
Seventeen sound units in 5-7-5 with a 季語 seasonal word. 松尾芭蕉 Bashō is the canonical poet. Note it counts moras, not syllables.
和歌 (わか) と短歌 (たんか)
Classical poetry in 5-7-5-7-7. The 万葉集 is the oldest anthology, from the eighth century.
歌舞伎 (かぶき) と能 (のう)
Kabuki is dynamic, colorful and popular in origin; Noh is slow, masked and austere. 文楽 is the puppet theater. All three are UNESCO-recognized.
侘び寂び (わびさび)
An aesthetic of simplicity, imperfection and the beauty of impermanence. Difficult to translate and therefore valuable when used accurately.
もののあわれ
A sensitivity to the transience of things, associated with 源氏物語 The Tale of Genji. The cherry blossom is its standard emblem precisely because it falls.
間 (ま)
The meaningful interval — of space in design, of silence in speech and music. Central to Japanese aesthetics and to conversation.
建築 (けんちく)
Architecture. 神社 shrine, 寺 temple, 城 castle, 畳 tatami, 障子 paper screen, 縁側 veranda. 金閣寺 and 東大寺 are safe examples.
漫画 (まんが) と アニメ
Manga and anime. 手塚治虫 Tezuka is called the father of modern manga; 宮崎駿 Miyazaki is the best-known director. Contemporary and easily specific.
伝統工芸 (でんとうこうげい)
Traditional crafts: 陶器 pottery, 漆器 lacquerware, 織物 textiles, 折り紙 origami.
絵を説明する
手前に in the foreground, 奥に in the background, 真ん中に in the center, 左上に upper left. Fixed phrases for describing an image.
〜ば and 〜たら conditionals
ば is more hypothetical and often written; たら is the general conditional and most common in speech. 安ければ買います / 安かったら買います。
〜と for automatic consequence
Used when the result always follows: 春になると、桜が咲きます。Cannot be used for requests, invitations or intentions in the main clause.
〜なら for a given topic
Responds to a condition someone has raised: 日本語なら、田中さんに聞いてください。Different from たら in that the condition is already on the table.
Adjective conjugation review
い-adjectives: 高い、高くない、高かった、高くなかった。な-adjectives use です・ではありません・でした・ではありませんでした。Mixing the two paradigms is a very common error.
〜すぎる and 〜やすい / 〜にくい
Verb stem + すぎる is excess (食べすぎる); やすい easy to do, にくい hard to do (書きやすい). All conjugate as い-adjectives.
Comparatives
AよりBのほうが〜です for two items; 〜の中で一番 for superlatives. 日本語と英語とどちらのほうが難しいですか。
二つの作品を比べる
両方とも、一方は〜が、もう一方は〜。A comparison needs a shared criterion stated before the details.

Practice Japanese Lang

Our practice bank is drawn from across the whole course rather than filtered to one unit, which is closer to how the exam asks anyway — it will not tell you which unit a question is testing.
