- Word count and its meaning
- The Academic Paper runs to roughly 4,000 to 5,000 words. It is a limit that forces selection, and a paper that summarizes everything read will not fit.
- Abstract
- A concise statement of question, method, findings and significance. Written last, even though it appears first.
- Introduction: what it must do
- Establish the topic's significance, narrow to the gap, and state the research question. It ends where the literature review begins.
- Literature review as an argument
- It should build a case that your question is worth asking and unanswered. A list of summaries is the failure mode, and it is the most common one.
- Organizing a literature review
- By theme or by debate, never by source. If your subheadings are author names, restructure before writing.
- Theoretical framework
- The existing theory your study sits inside and uses to interpret findings. Stating it explains why you looked at what you looked at.
- Method section standard
- Detailed enough that another researcher could replicate the study. If a reader would have to guess at any step, add it.
- Reporting participants
- Number, relevant characteristics, how recruited, and what consent process applied. Report what is relevant to the question, not everything you collected.
- Instrument description
- What you used to measure, where it came from, and evidence of its reliability and validity. An instrument you built yourself needs more justification than one you adopted.
- Procedure narrative
- Chronological account of what participants actually experienced. Writing it as a sequence surfaces steps you would otherwise omit.
- Results without interpretation
- Report what you found and nothing about what it means. Every sentence of interpretation in a results section belongs in the discussion.
- Tables and figures
- Number them, caption them, and refer to each in the text. A table nothing in the text points at is not doing work.
- Discussion structure
- Restate the key finding, interpret it against the literature, state limitations, then implications and future research. That order is conventional and readers expect it.
- Interpreting a null result
- Failure to find an effect is a finding, not a failed study. Discuss whether the design had the power to detect an effect of the size you expected.
- Limitations written well
- Name the specific threat and its likely direction of effect. "The sample was small" is weak; "the convenience sample drew from one school, so results may not extend to schools with different demographics" is a limitation.
- Implications
- What follows for practice, policy or theory if the finding holds. Scaled to what your evidence can actually support.
- Future research
- Specific next studies, not "more research is needed." Naming the design that would answer what yours could not shows command of method.
- Conclusion
- Answer the research question directly. A conclusion that does not state the answer is the most common structural omission.
- Bibliography and consistency
- Every in-text citation appears in the bibliography and vice versa. Mismatches are checked and are avoidable.
- Appendices
- Instruments, protocols, consent forms and coding schemes. They support replication without consuming the word count.
- Academic voice
- Precise, hedged where uncertainty exists, and free of unearned certainty. "The data suggest" is usually more accurate than "the data prove."
- Hedging without vagueness
- Hedge the strength of the claim, not its content. "Participants who reported more sleep also scored higher" is precise and appropriately limited.
- Avoiding overclaim in the abstract
- The abstract is where overclaim most often slips in, because it is written last and under pressure. Check that every word of it is licensed by the results.
- Peer review of your own draft
- Give a draft to someone outside your topic and ask them to state your question and answer. If they cannot, the structure is not working.
- The process and reflection portfolio
- A record of the inquiry, including consultations with your teacher and expert adviser. It is a required part of the assessment and is built throughout, not assembled at the end.
What examiners penalize here
- AP Research reviewers score how well you situate your study in existing scholarship. A thematically synthesized review that ends on a clearly articulated gap directly earns credit in the "understand and analyze context" and "identify a gap" rubric expectations.
- Reviewers expect the conventions of academic writing, including a replicable method and clearly separated sections. A method a peer could actually reproduce earns credit for rigor; a vague one ("I surveyed some students") signals a study that cannot be trusted or repeated.
- The AP Research rubric explicitly credits discussing implications and limitations and reaching a conclusion your evidence actually supports. A modest, well-bounded claim scores higher than an ambitious one your small study cannot back — calibrate your conclusions to your data.
