- Silk Roads
- Overland Eurasian routes carrying luxury goods, and more consequentially religions, technologies and disease. Revived under Mongol protection.
- Pax Mongolica
- Roughly a century of relative security across Mongol-controlled Eurasia, supported by the yam relay system. Significance: enabled travel by figures such as Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, and Rabban Bar Sauma, and moved gunpowder, printing, and medical knowledge westward — along with the plague.
- Caravanserai
- Roadside inns spaced about a day’s travel apart along Silk Road and trans-Saharan routes. Significance: their spread after 1200 lowered the risk and cost of overland trade and made towns into nodes of cultural and technological transmission.
- Swahili city-states
- Coastal East African trading towns such as Kilwa, Mombasa, and Sofala. Significance: exported gold, ivory, and enslaved people into the Indian Ocean system; their Bantu-Arabic Swahili language and Islamic urban culture show how commerce produced syncretic societies.
- Money economy and credit
- Bills of exchange, banking houses and paper money let merchants trade without carrying coin, expanding the scale of commerce.
- Mongol Empire
- The largest contiguous land empire, which imposed the Pax Mongolica, moved administrators and craftsmen across Eurasia, and adopted local practice where useful.
- Black Death
- Plague traveling the trade networks, killing perhaps a third of Europe's population. Labor scarcity raised wages and weakened serfdom.
- Indian Ocean trade
- Monsoon-driven maritime commerce linking East Africa, Arabia, India and Southeast Asia in bulk goods rather than only luxuries.
- Monsoon winds
- Predictable seasonal reversal that made Indian Ocean voyages plannable, and fixed how long merchants stayed in foreign ports.
- Diasporic merchant communities
- Arab, Gujarati and Chinese traders settling in foreign ports, marrying locally and creating hybrid cultures such as Swahili.
- Maritime technology transfer
- The compass and sternpost rudder from China, the lateen sail and astrolabe from the Islamic world — combined, they made oceanic voyaging possible.
- Zheng He's voyages
- Seven Ming treasure fleet expeditions from 1405 projecting prestige and collecting tribute. Ended by court decision, showing withdrawal was a choice, not an inability.
- Effects of exchange on the environment
- Bananas reached Africa, citrus and sugar spread west, and both crops and epidemic disease traveled with the traders.
- Marco Polo and cross-cultural accounts
- Travelers' accounts shaped how regions imagined one another and stimulated later European interest in direct routes to Asia.
- Lateen sail
- A triangular sail allowing a ship to tack against the wind, which combined with monsoon knowledge made predictable round-trip Indian Ocean voyages possible.
- Dhow
- The characteristic Indian Ocean vessel, lateen-rigged and sewn rather than nailed, built for monsoon sailing.
- Junk
- Chinese ship with watertight bulkheads and a sternpost rudder, carrying cargo volumes no European vessel of the period matched.
- Camel saddle
- Made trans-Saharan crossing commercially viable by allowing heavy loads over long waterless stretches — a small technology with continental consequences.
- Bills of exchange
- Credit instruments letting a merchant settle a large transaction without transporting bullion, one of the institutions that made long-distance trade practical.
- Sogdian merchants
- Central Asian trading network that carried goods, Buddhism and Manichaeism along the Silk Roads before 1200, an early diasporic commercial community.
- Yam system
- Mongol relay stations spaced roughly a day apart with fresh horses and provisions, carrying imperial messages and serving authorized merchants — Mongol rule as trade infrastructure.
- Mongol religious toleration
- Exempting religious communities from taxation and welcoming foreign specialists, which drew administrators and artisans across the empire and accelerated exchange.
- Forced relocation of artisans
- The Mongols moved skilled workers and officials across Eurasia, often against their will, so techniques traveled with the people who held them.
- Technology transfer under the Mongols
- Chinese gunpowder and printing moved west while Persian and Arab astronomy, mathematics and medicine moved east — the most intense Eurasian exchange before the sixteenth century.
- Sack of Baghdad (1258)
- Mongol destruction of the Abbasid capital killed a large share of its population and wrecked libraries and irrigation, and the city never regained its former position.
- Plague and labor scarcity
- Mortality of a third or more made labor scarce relative to land, raising wages and bargaining power and contributing to the erosion of serfdom in Western Europe.
- Plague and scapegoating
- Jewish communities were massacred on accusations of poisoning wells, showing that a catastrophe institutions could not explain produced persecution as well as piety.
- Sugarcane and the plantation model
- Sugar moved west from South Asia through the Islamic world into the Mediterranean, carrying a coerced plantation labor model later transplanted to the Atlantic.
- Bananas in East Africa
- Carried by Austronesian voyagers, they raised carrying capacity and supported Bantu population growth — crop diffusion changing demography long before 1492.
- Malacca
- Commanded the strait between the Indian and Pacific oceans and taxed traffic through it, which is exactly why the Portuguese seized it in 1511. Control of a chokepoint was a form of wealth.
- Timbuktu
- Trans-Saharan terminus that became a center of Islamic scholarship as well as commerce, showing trade routes carrying learning alongside gold and salt.
- Networks are not selective
- A trade route moves whatever can travel with a merchant — goods, technologies, religions and pathogens alike. The same connectivity that raised prosperity created the vulnerability.
What examiners penalize here
- For any trade-route question, connect the *type of transport* to the *type of goods*. Overland routes (Silk Roads) carried high-value luxuries; sea routes could carry heavier bulk goods more cheaply. This transport-cost logic is a reliable analytical move on the exam.
- The plague is the exam's favorite illustration of a **network effect**: the same connectivity that raised prosperity created the vulnerability. If you can state that in one sentence and then give a specific consequence — wages rising, serfdom eroding, communities scapegoated — you have the causation point and the complexity point together.
