From an Earth-centered to a Sun-centered cosmos
For centuries Europeans accepted the geocentric model of Ptolemy and Aristotle, endorsed by the Church: an unmoving Earth at the center of the universe, circled by perfect crystalline spheres. The Scientific Revolution shattered this view. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric (Sun-centered) universe in 1543. Johannes Kepler showed the planets move in ellipses, not perfect circles. Galileo Galilei used the new telescope to find evidence — moons orbiting Jupiter, craters on the moon — supporting Copernicus, and was tried by the Inquisition for it. The synthesis came from Isaac Newton, whose law of universal gravitation (1687) explained both falling apples and orbiting planets with a single set of mathematical laws.
A new method of knowing
Beyond specific discoveries, the revolution introduced a new method for finding truth. Francis Bacon championed empiricism and inductive reasoning — building general conclusions from careful observation and experiment. René Descartes stressed deductive reasoning and systematic doubt, beginning from "I think, therefore I am" and reasoning from first principles; his rationalism split mind from matter. Combined, these approaches formed the scientific method: question, hypothesize, experiment, and conclude, using mathematics as the language of nature. Knowledge would now rest on reason and evidence rather than ancient authority or Scripture.
Science, religion, and society
The new science strained but did not simply destroy religion. The Church condemned Galileo, yet many scientists — Newton included — were devout and saw their work as revealing God’s rational design (a view later called deism, picturing God as a "clockmaker" who set the universe running by natural laws). New institutions spread discovery: royal academies and scientific societies (the Royal Society in England, the French Academy of Sciences) shared findings and gave science prestige and state support. Crucially, the revolution planted the idea that human reason could uncover the laws of nature — a confidence that the Enlightenment would soon apply to society and government.
Pair the two founders of method: Bacon = empiricism/induction (reason up from observations) and Descartes = rationalism/deduction (reason down from first principles). The scientific method fuses both — evidence and logic together.

Avoid a simple "science vs. religion" story. Many key figures, including Newton, were sincerely religious and saw natural law as evidence of God’s design (deism). The revolution changed how truth was verified, but did not immediately abolish faith.
