Why Britain first
The Industrial Revolution — the shift from hand production to powered machinery and factories, beginning around 1780 — started in Britain for a combination of advantages. Britain had abundant coal and iron; a large supply of capital and a stable banking system; a colonial empire that supplied raw materials (especially cotton) and markets; an agricultural revolution that raised food output and freed workers for factories; and a relatively stable, pro-business government. Navigable rivers and canals, and soon railroads, moved goods cheaply. Together these conditions let Britain mechanize textile production and lead the world into the industrial age.
Machines, steam, and the factory
The first breakthroughs came in textiles, where inventions like the spinning jenny and power loom massively increased cloth output. The decisive technology was James Watt’s improved steam engine, which freed factories from riverside water power and could drive machinery, locomotives, and ships anywhere. Production moved from scattered homes (the "putting-out" system) into large factories where workers labored under one roof to the discipline of the clock and the machine. The railroad and the steamship then revolutionized transport, shrinking distances, expanding markets, and stimulating demand for coal and iron in a self-reinforcing cycle of growth.
The Second Industrial Revolution
From about 1870, a Second Industrial Revolution brought new industries and materials. Steel (via the Bessemer process) replaced iron; chemicals, electricity, and the internal-combustion engine created whole new sectors. Electricity lit cities and powered streetcars and factories; communication leaped forward with the telegraph and telephone. Leadership shifted: Germany and the United States now rivaled and often surpassed Britain, especially in steel, chemicals, and electrical goods. Production grew more science-based and organized into large corporations, and the mass output of consumer goods laid the foundation for modern mass consumer society.
Separate the two phases: the First Industrial Revolution ran on coal, steam, iron, and textiles and was led by Britain; the Second ran on steel, electricity, chemicals, and oil and was led increasingly by Germany and the United States.
