Melody: contour, range, and motion
A melody is a succession of pitches heard as a coherent line. Its contour is the shape it traces — ascending, descending, arching, or wavelike — and its range is the distance from lowest to highest note. Melodies move in two ways: conjunct motion proceeds by step (seconds), giving a smooth, singable line, while disjunct motion uses leaps (thirds and larger), creating angular, dramatic lines. Most memorable tunes balance the two, and phrases usually resolve back toward the tonic.
Timbre: why instruments sound different
Timbre (tone color) is what lets you tell a trumpet from a flute playing the same pitch at the same volume. It arises chiefly from the overtone series — the pattern of quieter higher frequencies (harmonics) sounding above the fundamental — and from the note’s envelope, its attack, sustain, and decay. A plucked string, a bowed string, and a struck bar excite these components differently. Composers exploit timbre through orchestration, choosing which instruments carry which material.
Texture: how many independent layers
Texture describes how melodic and harmonic lines combine. Monophony is a single unaccompanied melodic line (one voice, or many in unison). Homophony presents one main melody supported by chords or accompaniment moving with it — the most common texture in Western music. Polyphony (counterpoint) weaves two or more independent melodic lines of comparable interest, as in a fugue or a round. A related type, heterophony, has multiple voices performing varied versions of the same melody at once.

To classify texture, count the independent melodic lines and ask whether the other parts are subordinate. One line = monophony; one melody plus accompaniment = homophony; several lines of equal interest = polyphony.

Aural questions often ask you to hear texture. Train the cue: if a second melody enters that is as interesting as the first (a fugue subject, a round), it is polyphony; if the added parts merely fill in chords beneath the tune, it is homophony.
