AP Music Theory
Read, write and hear music — from intervals and chords to voice-leading and sight-singing. The CED spans 8 units (aural skills are woven throughout).
How this exam works. A written section on notation, harmony and analysis, plus an aural section — melodic and harmonic dictation — and two sight-singing tasks you record.
The written section: fundamentals, key signatures, intervals, chord function, voice leading and analysis. That is the larger part of the exam and our material covers it properly.
Dictation and sight-singing. Both are ear-and-voice skills that only improve by doing them aloud.
What to do instead. Sing intervals daily and take short dictation exercises with a keyboard. Ten minutes a day of actual singing beats any amount of reading about it.
