The motive as a building block

A motive is the smallest recognizable musical idea — a short pattern of pitches and/or rhythm that a composer develops across a piece. The four-note opening of Beethoven’s Fifth is the classic example. Motives give music unity and are transformed through development: repeated, extended, fragmented, and altered. Learning to spot the motive and track its transformations is the core skill of melodic analysis.

Sequence, imitation, and transposition

A sequence restates a motive at a different pitch level, usually several times in a row, keeping its contour. A diatonic sequence stays within the key (qualities may shift), while a real sequence transposes exactly, preserving every interval. Transposition simply moves material to a new pitch level. Imitation occurs when one voice states an idea and another voice restates it shortly after, as in the entries of a fugue or a round — the foundation of polyphonic texture.

The four classic transformations

Composers reshape motives with four standard operations. Inversion flips the melodic direction — every ascending interval becomes descending and vice versa. Retrograde states the motive backward, last note first. Augmentation lengthens the rhythmic values (quarters become halves), broadening the idea; diminution shortens them (quarters become eighths), quickening it. These can be combined, and each keeps the motive recognizable while transforming its character.

A sequence moves the motive to a new pitch level; imitation restates it in another voice. Inversion, retrograde, augmentation, and diminution alter pitch direction, order, or rhythm.
Worked example

A motive is C–D–E (up a step, then up another step). Give its melodic inversion and its retrograde.

  1. 1.Describe the motive’s intervals: C up to D is an ascending whole step, and D up to E is another ascending whole step — two steps up.
  2. 2.Inversion reverses each interval’s direction: starting on C, go down a step to B, then down a step to A, yielding C–B–A.
  3. 3.Retrograde reverses the order of notes: E–D–C.
  4. 4.Both keep the two-step shape but transform direction (inversion) or order (retrograde).
Answer: Inversion of C–D–E is C–B–A (the ascending steps become descending). Retrograde is E–D–C (the notes in reverse order).

Separate pitch transformations from rhythm transformations. Inversion and retrograde change pitch (direction or order); augmentation and diminution change duration. If a theme returns "slower and grander" with the same pitches, that is augmentation, not inversion.

In fugue and imitative-texture questions, the subject often reappears in augmentation, inversion, or both. When you spot a familiar contour that is slower, upside down, or backward, name the specific transformation — that precise vocabulary is what earns the analysis point.
