An enzyme catalyses the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide. A student measures reaction rate at pH values from 3 to 11 and finds the rate peaks sharply at pH 7 and is nearly zero at pH 3 and pH 11.

Identify the independent variable and the dependent variable.
