A test on this unit alone, marked as a percentage and a letter grade — for the test your class is actually sitting, rather than for May. Answer everything, then submit once: seeing the answer to question 3 before attempting question 4 makes the final percentage meaningless.

ARTICLE ANALYSIS QUESTION (AAQ). Read the description of the study and respond to the parts that follow. Researchers examined the relationship between adolescent social media use and depressive symptoms. They surveyed 1,450 students aged 13 to 17 drawn from 12 public high schools across three geographic regions. Parents provided consent and students provided assent; all responses were anonymous and stored without identifying information. Students reported their average daily hours of recreational social media use and completed a validated 20-item depressive symptom inventory scored from 0 to 60, with higher scores indicating more symptoms. The researchers found a correlation of r = +0.22 between reported daily hours of use and depressive symptom scores. In a secondary analysis, students who reported more than five hours of daily use had a mean symptom score of 21.4 compared with 15.9 for students reporting under one hour. (A) (i) Identify the research method used. (ii) State the operational definition of depressive symptoms in this study. (B) Describe what a correlation of r = +0.22 indicates about the relationship between the two variables, including its strength and direction. (C) (i) Explain why the researchers cannot conclude that social media use causes depressive symptoms, naming a specific alternative explanation. (ii) Identify one ethical guideline the researchers followed and explain how it was satisfied. (iii) Explain one strength and one weakness of this study’s design with respect to generalizability.
