- Absolute vs relative location
- Absolute is fixed coordinates; relative describes position with respect to other places, and changes as connections change.
- Site vs situation
- Site is a place's physical characteristics; situation is its position relative to other places. Situation explains why trade cities grow where they do.
- Place vs space
- Space is location; place is space invested with meaning. Sense of place is why identical suburbs still feel different to residents.
- Scale of analysis
- Global, regional, national and local. A pattern visible at one scale can vanish or reverse at another, which is why the question always names a scale.
- Formal, functional and perceptual regions
- Formal share a measurable trait; functional organize around a node such as a metro area; perceptual exist in people's minds, like "the South".
- Map projections and distortion
- Every flat map distorts area, shape, distance or direction. Mercator preserves direction while inflating high latitudes; Robinson compromises across all four.
- Choropleth map
- Shades areas by a rate or ratio. Misleading when unit sizes vary widely, since a large sparse area dominates the visual impression.
- Types of thematic map
- Dot density shows distribution, graduated symbol shows magnitude, isoline connects equal values, cartogram sizes areas by a variable.
- Geographic Information Systems
- Layered spatial data allowing analysis of relationships between variables — the standard tool of applied geography.
- Remote sensing and GPS
- Remote sensing gathers data from satellites and aircraft; GPS gives precise location. Both feed GIS.
- Distance decay
- Interaction between two places weakens as distance grows. Weakened but not eliminated by modern transport and communication.
- Time-space compression
- Improvements in transport and communication reduce the effective distance between places, which is why distance decay matters less than it once did.
- Spatial diffusion types
- Relocation moves with migrants; expansion spreads outward — hierarchical down a settlement hierarchy, contagious by proximity, stimulus by adopting the idea not the form.
- Environmental determinism vs possibilism
- Determinism claims environment dictates culture and is now rejected as pseudo-scientific; possibilism holds environment sets limits within which people choose.
What examiners penalize here
- On the exam, never call a projection “wrong.” Frame every map choice as a **trade-off**: name the property preserved (shape, area, distance, or direction) and the property sacrificed, then tie it to the map’s purpose. That reasoning earns the point.
