- Perspective vs argument
- A perspective is a position shaped by a person's situation, discipline or values. An argument is a specific set of claims. One perspective can generate several arguments.
- Disciplinary lens
- The set of questions, methods and evidence a field considers legitimate. An economist, an ethicist and a historian asked the same question produce different answers because they ask different questions.
- Common lenses to name
- Cultural, artistic, philosophical, political, historical, environmental, economic, scientific, ethical, futuristic. Naming the lens explicitly earns credit; implying it does not.
- Why two lenses beat two sources
- Two sources from the same discipline agreeing is not multiple perspectives. Genuine breadth means different frameworks, not just different authors.
- Identifying the lens of a source
- Look at what counts as evidence in it. A source that measures outcomes in dollars is economic; one that measures them in rights is ethical.
- Stakeholder analysis
- Who is affected, who decides, who pays, who benefits, who is excluded. The last category is where the overlooked perspective usually sits.
- Overlooked stakeholders
- Future generations, non-participants, those without a platform, and those affected indirectly. Naming one that other students miss is a reliable way to distinguish an essay.
- Positionality
- How an author's own situation shapes what they can see. It applies to you as well, and acknowledging your own is a sophistication move rather than a weakness.
- Bias vs point of view
- A point of view is a position openly held and defended; bias is distortion that is not disclosed. Sources with a clear point of view can be excellent evidence.
- Using a biased source well
- Cite it for what it is evidence OF — a position held, a rhetorical strategy, an interest represented — rather than for the factual claim it makes.
- Recognizing consensus and its limits
- Where experts broadly agree, say so and cite the consensus rather than a single study. Where they disagree, do not manufacture agreement by choosing one side quietly.
- False balance
- Presenting two positions as equally supported when the evidence is lopsided. Balance is not the goal; accurate representation of the state of the evidence is.
- Cultural context and translation
- A concept may not transfer across cultures intact. Noting where a term does not translate is often more analytically useful than forcing an equivalent.
- Historical perspective
- What a source could plausibly have known at the time. Judging a 1950 argument by 2020 evidence is anachronism, not analysis.
- Ethical frameworks to distinguish
- Consequentialist reasoning judges by outcomes, deontological by duties and rights, virtue ethics by character. Naming which a source uses explains why two people disagree without either being irrational.
- Tension vs contradiction
- A tension is a genuine pull between two defensible goods; a contradiction is an error. Most hard questions involve tensions, and saying so is a sophistication move.
- Weighing perspectives
- You must eventually choose. Explain the criteria by which you weighed them — evidence quality, scope of harm, reversibility — rather than asserting a preference.
- Presenting a perspective fairly
- State it in terms its holders would recognize. If a proponent would not accept your description, you have not represented it.
- Avoiding the "both sides" conclusion
- Ending with "there are good points on both sides" is a description, not a conclusion. The rubric asks for a defended position.
- When to concede
- Concede a point the evidence genuinely supports, then explain why your conclusion still holds. A concession that costs nothing is not a concession.
- Rebuttal that engages
- Answer the strongest version of the objection on its own terms. Restating your original claim more loudly is not a rebuttal.
- Perspective in the team project
- Each team member is expected to investigate a distinct lens. Overlapping lenses is the most common team failure and shows up directly in the scoring.
- Documenting perspectives you rejected
- The oral defense may ask what you did not pursue and why. Having a reasoned answer demonstrates the process the rubric rewards.
What examiners penalize here
- Seminar’s "understand and analyze multiple perspectives" row rewards depth, not just count. Two perspectives whose assumptions you genuinely unpack beat five you merely name. Always explain *why* each perspective sees the issue as it does.
- The highest rubric bands describe "evaluating" perspectives, not merely presenting them. Signal the move with comparative language — "whereas," "both assume," "the stronger evidence lies with" — and state the criteria you are judging by.
- On the exam, precisely naming a flaw ("this commits a false dilemma") is stronger evidence of critical analysis than vaguely calling an argument "weak." A correctly identified fallacy is a concrete, rubric-worthy critique.
