- Argument vs assertion
- An assertion states a position; an argument supports it with reasons and evidence. Sources that assert without supporting are still useful as evidence of a position held.
- Claim, evidence, reasoning, conclusion
- The four parts to locate in any source. If you cannot find the reasoning, the source may be relying on an unstated assumption you should name.
- Warrant
- The unstated principle connecting evidence to claim. Naming it is the single highest-value analytical move on this exam, because it exposes what the author needs you to accept without argument.
- Backing
- Support for the warrant itself, offered when an audience is unlikely to grant it. Its presence tells you the author expected resistance.
- Qualifier in an argument
- Words like "often", "in most cases", "under these conditions" that limit the claim. A missing qualifier where one is needed is a weakness worth naming.
- Toulmin model, applied
- Claim, evidence, warrant, backing, qualifier, rebuttal. Useful as an analytical checklist for a source; it is a diagnostic tool, not an essay template.
- Summary vs analysis
- Summary reports what a source says; analysis explains how it argues and how well. An essay that summarizes three sources in turn has not analyzed anything.
- Analyzing the reasoning, not the topic
- The question is whether the evidence supports the claim, not whether you agree with the conclusion. Agreement and validity are independent.
- Evidence types and their weight
- Empirical data, expert testimony, case study, historical precedent, anecdote, analogy. Anecdote and analogy illustrate; they rarely establish.
- Sufficiency of evidence
- Enough evidence, of the right kind, to support the size of the claim. A single case study cannot support a claim about a whole population.
- Representativeness
- Whether the evidence reflects the population the claim is about. A survey of one university cannot support a claim about young people generally.
- Cherry-picking
- Selecting only the evidence that supports a position. Detectable by comparing a source against the wider literature — one reason lateral reading matters.
- Statistical significance vs importance
- A statistically significant result can be too small to matter. Look for effect size, not just a p-value, and say so when a source omits it.
- Base rate neglect
- Judging a probability without reference to how common the underlying event is. Common in reporting on medical tests and rare risks.
- Survivorship bias
- Drawing conclusions only from cases that made it through a filter. Studying successful companies without studying failed ones produces advice that cannot be tested.
- Selection bias in a source's data
- When how participants were chosen determines the result. Ask how the sample was assembled before accepting any finding based on it.
- Composition and division fallacies
- Composition assumes what is true of a part is true of the whole; division assumes the reverse. Both appear frequently in arguments about groups.
- Circular reasoning
- The conclusion is assumed in the premises. Hard to spot because it reads smoothly; test by asking whether the reason would convince someone who did not already agree.
- Equivocation
- Shifting the meaning of a key term mid-argument. Watch words like "natural", "freedom", "fair" and "equal", which carry different meanings in different disciplines.
- Appeal to tradition and appeal to novelty
- Neither age nor newness makes a claim true. Both are common in policy debate and both are worth naming when a source relies on them.
- Loaded language
- Word choice that smuggles in a judgment. Naming it shows the author is doing persuasive work the evidence does not do.
- Charitable reading
- Represent an argument in its strongest form before criticizing it. Attacking a weakened version is a straw man and is penalized in scoring.
- Steelmanning a counterargument
- Building the best version of the opposing case. It makes your rebuttal stronger and is one of the clearest routes to the top scoring band.
- Analyzing visual and quantitative sources
- Check the axes, the baseline, the scale, what is omitted, and who produced it. A truncated y-axis exaggerates a difference without stating anything false.
- Analyzing tone in a source
- Tone signals intended audience and purpose. A policy brief and an op-ed on the same evidence differ in tone because they are doing different work.
What examiners penalize here
- The Seminar rubrics repeatedly separate "identify" from "explain." Do not merely quote evidence — state the claim it supports and articulate the reasoning. Papers that drop quotations without explaining their significance stall in the lower rubric rows.
- The IWA rubric’s top band describes a "well-established, convincing" line of reasoning. Graders literally follow your argument’s spine — use clear sub-claims and transitions so the progression from evidence to conclusion is impossible to lose.
- On the IRR and IWA, name each source’s argument, purpose, and perspective before you use it. Graders reward students who show they *understood* a source in its context — a fair summary earns credit and sets up the evaluation that earns more.
