Harmony & Voice Leading III: Embellishments, Motives & Melodic Devices unit test

A test on this unit alone, marked as a percentage and a letter grade — for the test your class is actually sitting, rather than for May. Answer everything, then submit once: seeing the answer to question 3 before attempting question 4 makes the final percentage meaningless.

Each paper is built from this unit’s 18 terms and is the same for everyone, so a teacher can assign “Unit 6, Paper 1” and every student sits the identical test. Multiple choice is marked objectively; the written sections you mark yourself against the model answer and rubric.

Analyze the following two-measure phrase described in text. The key signature has one sharp and the piece begins and ends on a G major chord; the meter is 4/4. The bass sounds one chord per beat: measure 1 beat 1 = G2, beat 2 = E3, beat 3 = C3 with the figure 6, beat 4 = D3 with the figure 7; measure 2 beat 1 = G2. The soprano sings: measure 1 beat 1 = D5 followed by C5 on the second half of the beat, beat 2 = B4, beat 3 = C5, beat 4 = C5 tied over from beat 3; measure 2 beat 1 = B4.

Name the key and provide a Roman numeral with inversion for each of the five chords.

Identify the type and function of the soprano C5 on beat 1 of measure 1.

Identify what the soprano C5 on beat 4 is in relation to the chord beneath it, and explain how it is resolved.

Name the cadence type and justify your answer.

Name the simple interval formed between the bass and the soprano on beat 4.
