- Sustained Investigation
- 15 images showing practice, experimentation and revision driven by one inquiry, plus written responses. Two-thirds of the portfolio score.
- Practice, experimentation, revision
- Practice: repeated, deliberate work that builds skill and knowledge. Experimentation: changing one variable on purpose to see what it does. Revision: altering earlier decisions in response to what an attempt revealed. Readers want visual evidence of all three.
- Acrylic vs oil in practice
- Acrylic dries in minutes and layers immediately; oil stays open for days and blends wet into wet. The medium determines what kind of decision is even possible.
- Watercolor discipline
- Light to dark, and the paper is the white. Planning where nothing will be painted is the whole method.
- Gouache
- Opaque water media that can be reworked and that dries matte and slightly shifted in value. The value shift on drying must be tested, not assumed.
- Screen printing
- Ink pushed through a stencil on mesh. Naturally produces flat color and editions, and separations are excellent process evidence.
- Relief printing
- Cutting away what will not print. Irreversible, so state proofs pulled at each stage are ideal documentation of iteration.
- Intaglio
- Ink held in incised lines below the surface — etching, drypoint, engraving. Produces line quality no other process gives.
- Monotype
- A single print from a painted plate. Unrepeatable, which makes it a fast tool for testing composition and color.
- Cyanotype and alternative photographic processes
- Light-sensitive coating on paper or cloth. Cheap, distinctive, and legible as experimentation in a sequence.
- Photography within a 2-D portfolio
- Fully admissible. Contact sheets, alternative crops and edit versions are strong process documentation.
- Digital layering and version history
- Screenshots of layer stacks and saved versions evidence process that a flattened export erases.
- Textile and fiber approaches in 2-D
- Dyeing, stitching and weaving on a flat plane. They introduce actual texture into a 2-D investigation.
- Working in a limited palette
- Two colors plus white forces value and temperature decisions. One of the most productive constraints available.
- Grisaille and underpainting
- Establishing value in monochrome before color. It separates two hard problems that most students attempt simultaneously.
- Scale of mark relative to format
- A brush size that works at A4 is invisible at wall scale. Changing format without changing tools produces flat, undifferentiated surfaces.
- Documenting a series side by side
- One image showing several works together can communicate development faster than four separate images.
- Editions and variation
- Printing a run and altering some impressions is a clean way to evidence controlled experimentation.
- Inquiry that names a visual problem
- The strongest 2-D inquiries name something you can change in the work: a color relationship, a spatial ambiguity, a compositional constraint. Subject-only inquiries produce illustration.
- Testing one variable at a time
- Change palette, or scale, or composition, but not all three between consecutive works. Isolating a variable is what makes development visible.
- Reading a sequence for development
- A reader should be able to say what you learned between image four and image five. If they cannot, the sequence needs reordering or the gaps need process images.
- Documenting color decisions
- Include a discarded palette or a color test. Color is the hardest 2-D decision to evidence and the easiest to assert without proof.
- Working from your own photographs
- The safest source material, and it lets you document the reference alongside the work. Shooting your own reference is itself experimentation.
- Appropriation and transformation
- Using existing imagery requires substantial change in form, content or meaning plus acknowledgment. Changing medium or cropping is not transformation.
- Generative AI is not permitted for artwork
- A rule about the work, not only the writing. Documented process helps demonstrate authorship.
- The two written responses
- One states the inquiry, one describes how materials, processes and ideas developed it. Both are tightly character-limited, so every clause must carry weight.
- Writing that names evidence
- Point to specific images: "in images 6 through 9 I limited the palette to two complements to test whether…". Generalities about growth score nothing.
- The commonest written-response failure
- Describing what the images depict. The reader can see that; they cannot see why you made the choices.
- Series as structure
- Several works answering one question. It gives a reader the comparison they need and gives you a reason to make the next piece.
- Deliberate constraint
- Restricting palette, format or material forces invention. A stated constraint is easy to evidence and reads as investigation rather than habit.
- Surface and substrate
- Paper weight, canvas, board, panel and fabric each change how media behave. Changing substrate is a legitimate and visible experiment.
- Ground and underpainting
- A toned or colored ground changes every subsequent decision. Documenting the ground explains color relationships a finished image cannot.
- Layering and glazing
- Transparent layers over a dry underlayer build depth impossible in one pass. A process image mid-layer is worth more than the finished piece alone.
- Collage and mixed media
- Combining materials should answer a question about surface, history or juxtaposition. Combination for texture alone reads as decoration.
- Printmaking in a 2-D portfolio
- Relief, intaglio, screen and monotype all qualify. Editions and state proofs are excellent evidence of iteration and revision.
- Digital work and photography
- Fully admissible. Document layers, versions and settings; a digital piece with no visible process is harder to evidence than a physical one.
- Scale as a variable in 2-D
- The same composition at postcard and at wall scale is not the same work. Changing scale changes mark, viewing distance and the body of the viewer.
- Revision that is visible
- Photograph before and after a major change. A reader cannot credit a revision they cannot see.
- Including work you dislike
- If it produced a decision, it belongs. The portfolio evidences investigation, not a curated best-of.
- Photographing glossy or textured surfaces
- Cross-polarize or light at 45 degrees from both sides to kill specular reflection. Varnish and heavy impasto are the usual culprits.
- Inquiry
- A question that drives a body of work, not a subject or a theme. "Portraits" is a subject; "how does obscuring a face change who the viewer thinks it is?" is an inquiry.
- What readers score in the written responses
- Whether the writing identifies a genuine question, and whether the images show that question being investigated and revised over time. Not how good the work looks.
- The commonest written-response mistake
- Describing what you made instead of what you were asking. "I drew my grandmother in charcoal" earns nothing; "I tested whether removing the background made the figure read as isolated" does.
- Evidence of revision
- Two versions of a related work with a visible, explainable change. A portfolio of 15 unrelated finished pieces cannot show revision no matter how skilled it is.
- Why 15 images and not 15 pieces
- Detail shots and process images count. Showing the same work at two stages is often more useful than adding another finished piece.
- Writing about failure
- An experiment that did not work is strong evidence of investigation, provided you say what you learned. Readers reward the thinking, not the success rate.
- Sequencing the images
- Order them so the investigation reads as a development. Chronological is not automatically clearest; grouping by what each image tested often is.
- Materials, processes and ideas
- The written prompt asks about all three. Answering only about materials is the second most common way to lose the point.
- Scope of an inquiry
- Narrow enough to test in 15 images, broad enough to sustain a year. "Color" is too broad; "one exact shade of red" is too narrow.
- Documenting as you go
- Photograph work when it is made, not in May. Reconstructing a year of process from finished pieces is where most portfolios lose their evidence of revision.
What examiners penalize here
- When you photograph work for the SI, deliberately include **evidence of process and revision** — studies, alternate versions, in-progress shots — not only polished finals. Some of your 15 images should show the *investigation* itself. A portfolio of 15 finished, unrelated pieces reads as a gallery, not an inquiry, and loses the investigation row.
- Treat the **written evidence** as scored real estate, not a formality. State your inquiry as a question, then connect specific **materials, processes, and ideas** to it, and point at an experiment or revision. Writing that merely names a topic and praises the effort throws away easy points on the investigation row.
- When you sequence your images, put a **decision point** where a reader can see it: the last work of an exhausted direction next to the first work of the new one. That adjacency does more to demonstrate a developing inquiry than any single polished piece, because the change of direction is visible rather than merely claimed in the writing.
- Photograph every piece **the day it is finished**, and photograph stages as you make them. Documentation done continuously is a fifteen-minute habit; documentation postponed becomes a frantic week of bad photographs, and any process stage you covered over is unrecoverable. Check current file and format requirements in the AP Digital Portfolio well before the submission window, not during it.
- Read the current published rubric yourself, early, and translate each row into a checklist question you can ask of your own images. Students who have never read the rubric routinely optimize for the wrong thing — polish and quantity — while the rows are asking for visible inquiry, targeted experimentation, documented revision, and material choices that belong to the idea.
