Form
The three-dimensional shape of an object, with height, width and depth. Unlike 2-D form, this is actual rather than implied.
Two views per work
Selected Works permits two images for each of the five. Use the second only when the form or the idea changes with the angle.
Choosing the primary view
The angle that shows the silhouette, the structure and the surface at once. Walk around the work photographing every 30 degrees and choose afterward.
Turntable documentation
Rotating the work rather than the camera keeps lighting constant across views. Consistency makes a series of views readable as one object.
Three-point lighting for sculpture
Key to reveal form, fill to open the shadow, rim to separate from the background. Flat frontal light is the commonest documentation failure in 3-D.
Shadow as information
Cast shadow tells a viewer about the form and the space. Eliminating shadow entirely flattens a sculpture into a silhouette.
Backgrounds and sweeps
Seamless paper curved from wall to floor removes the horizon line. A visible corner behind a work competes with its edges.
Depth of field for objects
Stop down enough that the whole form is sharp. Shallow focus on a sculpture hides the parts a reader needs to judge.
Photographing very large or fixed work
Include the space, and photograph at a height that matches how a viewer meets it. A monumental work shot from above reads as a model.
Silhouette as a design check
Photograph the work as a black shape against white. If the silhouette is uninteresting from every angle, the form needs work.
Weight and apparent weight
A heavy material can be made to look light and the reverse. The gap between the two is one of sculpture's most reliable effects.
Openness and enclosure
Whether a viewer can see through or into a work changes the relationship entirely. Openings are compositional decisions.
Orientation and gravity
Hanging, leaning, floor-bound or wall-mounted. How a work meets gravity is read before its subject.
Multiples and installation
Many units arranged in space. The arrangement is the work, so the installation view is the primary document.
Documenting scale honestly
A reference object or a stated dimension. Without one, a reader cannot judge the ambition or the craft.
Common capping weaknesses in 3-D
One view only, flat lighting, cluttered backgrounds, no scale reference, unresolved bases, and documentation that shows no process.
What Selected Works evidences in 3-D
Skill with three-dimensional design and the ideas the work carries, judged from images plus a written justification for each work.
How many images per work
Selected Works permits two views for each of the five works. Use the second view only when it shows something the first cannot.
Choosing the second view
Pick the angle that changes the reading of the form, or a detail that carries the idea. A second view from ten degrees away wastes the slot.
Form and its relation to mass
Form is the three-dimensional shape; mass is the sense of matter within it. A hollow form can read as massive, and that gap is worth exploiting.
Volume and void
Enclosed space and the openings through it. In 3-D the empty spaces are compositional elements with the same weight as the solid.
Plane and edge in three dimensions
Where surfaces meet defines the silhouette from every angle. Sculptors check silhouettes by walking around; photographs must be chosen the same way.
Actual texture and surface treatment
Polishing, patina, glaze, burnishing, roughing. Surface changes how light behaves and can transform a form without changing it.
Color in three dimensions
Applied color, inherent material color, and the color of light. Painted sculpture and raw material make very different claims.
Balance: physical and visual
A work must literally stand and must also look balanced. The two can conflict, and resolving that conflict is a design problem worth writing about.
Structure and load path
Where the weight goes. Understanding it lets you make something look precarious that is in fact stable — a legitimate and striking effect.
Cantilever and tension
Extending unsupported, or holding with tension rather than compression. Both read as risk and require real engineering.
Modularity and repetition
Repeating a unit to build a larger form. Efficient to make, and it turns fabrication itself into the compositional method.
Scale shift as a strategy
Making a small thing large, or the reverse, changes meaning before anything else does. One of the most reliable 3-D moves.
Function and its refusal
A vessel that cannot hold, a chair that cannot be sat on. Refusing function is a statement, and a reader will read it as one whether you intended it or not.
In the round vs relief
In-the-round works from every angle; relief projects from a ground and has a front. Choosing relief limits the views and concentrates the composition.
Kinetic and interactive work
Movement, whether by motor, air or viewer. Document motion with a sequence of stills, since the portfolio accepts still images.
Base and plinth as part of the work
A base is a decision. Where a work meets the ground affects how it is read, and an unconsidered base undercuts a considered object.
Lighting for documentation
Directional key light to reveal form, fill to open the shadows, and a background that separates without distracting. Flat frontal light destroys three-dimensionality.
Background choice
Neutral, seamless, and darker or lighter than the work. Cluttered backgrounds are the most common avoidable fault in 3-D documentation.
Showing scale in an image
A scale reference is permitted and often necessary. Without it, a 4-inch and a 4-foot piece look identical.
Photographing reflective and transparent work
Diffuse the light through a tent or scrim. Direct sources produce hot spots that read as blown-out white and lose the form.
Photographing before installation is undone
Once a work is disassembled or fired, the opportunity is gone. Document at every stage on the assumption that this stage is the last.
Selected Works
5 works submitted as images with written justification of materials, processes and ideas. Scored on 3-D skill and on how well the writing accounts for the decisions.
What Selected Works is scored on
The quality of the 3-D design thinking and whether the written justification explains it. They need not come from the Sustained Investigation.
Choosing your five for 3-D
Pick work that reads clearly in photographs. A subtle surface that the camera cannot capture will not score what it deserves.
Mass and volume
Mass is the sense of solidity and weight; volume is the space a form occupies. A hollow form can have great volume and little mass, and saying which you intended is precise writing.
Positive and negative space in 3-D
Positive space is the material; negative space is the void it defines. In sculpture the negative space is a designed element, not leftover.
Actual vs implied texture
In 3-D, texture is usually actual — it can be touched. Describing it as implied, as you would in 2-D, is a vocabulary error readers notice.
Surface treatment
Patina, glaze, polish, sanding or paint. A deliberate surface choice is a design decision and belongs in the written justification.
Balance in three dimensions
Both visual and physical. A work can be visually asymmetrical and physically stable, and the tension between the two is often the point.
Structure and load
How a form supports itself. Cantilevers, tripods and tension members are structural choices worth naming rather than leaving implicit.
Additive vs subtractive process
Additive builds up material (modeling, assembling, welding); subtractive removes it (carving, cutting). Casting is a third route that reproduces a form.
Armature
An internal skeleton supporting a modeled form. Invisible in the finished work, which is exactly why it belongs in the process images.
Maquette
A small-scale model made to test a form before committing materials. Strong evidence of experimentation.
Showing placement in Selected Works documentation
Where a work sits changes how it reads. If placement is part of the idea, the documentation has to show the placement.
Scale and the viewer's body
Three-dimensional work is experienced relative to the human body. Making something hand-sized or room-sized is a decision about the viewer, not just about size.
Movement and kinetics
Implied movement through form and line, or actual movement in kinetic work. Actual movement needs video or a sequence to document.
Unity and variety in 3-D
Cohesion across a body of work, held against enough difference to show the inquiry being tested from more than one angle.
Function and non-function
Whether a work is meant to be used. Making a functional object non-functional, or the reverse, is a legitimate inquiry and worth stating plainly.
