What examiners penalize here

• For "El Sur," connect **space to identity**: the city holds Dahlmann’s European, bookish self; the South holds his criollo, heroic self. His movement between them, and the unresolved time of the ending, are how Borges dramatizes the theme of time and space — say so directly on the free response.
• For Bécquer, tie the Romantic devices to the theme of time: **anaphora** builds false hope, **antithesis** destroys it, and the closing **simile** makes the lost love as absolute as worship. Naming how each device advances the idea of irreversible time is the analytical move the rubric rewards.
