- For García Márquez, connect **technique to relationship**: objective narration plus terse dialogue makes us infer an unbreakable mother-son bond and the mother’s dignity. On the free response, quote a gesture or line and explain what it reveals — showing, not telling, is exactly the story’s method and yours.
- For Neruda, let the **antithesis** organize your reading of the relationship: loving/not loving, short love/long forgetting. Pairing each contrast with the speaker’s inability to let go turns a list of devices into an argument about the lasting weight of a lost love.
