- Scientific Revolution
- The seventeenth-century shift to explaining nature through observation, mathematics and experiment rather than authority. Its deepest change is in method — what counts as proof.
- Enlightened absolutism
- Rule by monarchs such as Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great, and Joseph II who adopted legal codification, toleration, and education reform. Significance: shows Enlightenment ideas being used to strengthen state efficiency and revenue while serfdom and noble privilege were preserved or extended.
- Philosophes
- Eighteenth-century public intellectuals — Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, Rousseau — who applied reason to religion, law, and government and circulated ideas through salons and the Encyclopédie. Significance: created a critical public sphere and supplied the vocabulary of rights, toleration, and constitutional limits.
- Copernicus
- De revolutionibus (1543) placed the sun at the center. Mathematically simpler than Ptolemy but not obviously better observationally at first, which is why acceptance was slow.
- Tycho Brahe and Kepler
- Brahe compiled unprecedentedly precise observations; Kepler used them to show planetary orbits are elliptical. Data and mathematics together broke the ancient assumption of circular perfection.
- Galileo
- Used the telescope to observe Jupiter's moons and the phases of Venus, evidence against a geocentric universe. His trial in 1633 is the standard case of the Church resisting the new science.
- Francis Bacon
- Advocated empiricism and inductive reasoning — collect observations, then generalize. The methodological argument for experiment as the route to knowledge.
- René Descartes
- Advocated deductive reasoning from indubitable first principles: "I think, therefore I am". Cartesian dualism separated mind from matter and made nature mathematically describable.
- Isaac Newton, Principia
- 1687. Universal gravitation unified terrestrial and celestial motion under a single mathematical law. It became the model of what any science should look like.
- Why the Scientific Revolution mattered beyond science
- It supplied a model — natural laws discoverable by reason — that Enlightenment thinkers applied to society, politics and economics.
- Enlightenment
- The eighteenth-century application of reason and natural law to human institutions, with the conviction that society could be improved deliberately.
- Voltaire
- Campaigned for religious toleration, freedom of expression and legal reform, mainly by satire. "Écrasez l'infâme" targeted clerical intolerance rather than belief itself.
- Montesquieu, The Spirit of the Laws
- 1748. Argued for separation of powers among executive, legislative and judiciary to prevent tyranny. Directly shaped later constitutional design.
- Rousseau, The Social Contract
- 1762. Legitimate authority rests on the general will of the people. The most radical Enlightenment political claim, and the one the French Revolution drew on most.
- Diderot's Encyclopédie
- A collaborative compendium of knowledge and implicit criticism of Church and state. Its significance is the deliberate spreading of critical thought to a paying public.
- Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations
- 1776. Argued that self-interest under competition allocates resources efficiently, and attacked mercantilist restriction. The founding text of classical economics.
- Deism
- Belief in a rational creator who does not intervene — the universe as a clock and God as the clockmaker. A characteristic Enlightenment position between orthodoxy and atheism.
- Salons
- Private gatherings, usually hosted by elite women, where philosophes met patrons and one another. The main institution through which Enlightenment ideas circulated and gained respectability.
- Public sphere
- The space of coffeehouses, salons, journals and reading societies where private people formed opinion on public matters. Its emergence is what made "public opinion" a political force.
- Joseph II
- The most thoroughgoing enlightened absolutist: abolished serfdom, granted toleration, and subordinated the Church. Most of it was reversed after his death, which is the standard evidence for the limits of reform from above.
- Mary Wollstonecraft
- A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) argued women appear inferior only because they are denied education. It applies Enlightenment reasoning to a group the philosophes largely excluded.
- Cameralism
- The German administrative science of managing state resources for prosperity and revenue. The bureaucratic face of enlightened absolutism.
- Limits of the Enlightenment
- Most philosophes accepted monarchy, few advocated equality for women, and several defended slavery or racial hierarchy. Essays that treat it as uniformly progressive misread the evidence.
- Aristotelian-Ptolemaic cosmology
- A motionless Earth at the center, planets on crystalline spheres in perfect circles, unchanging heavens above the Moon and a corruptible world below. It survived eighteen centuries because it fit the available evidence, agreed with scripture and was embedded in university philosophy — which is why displacing it was hard.
- Empiricism vs rationalism
- Bacon's empiricism reasons upward from many particular observations to a general law; Descartes' rationalism reasons downward from an indubitable first principle by logical steps, expressed mathematically. Newton's achievement was to satisfy both at once.
- Royal Society
- Chartered in 1662 to pursue experimental knowledge collaboratively, publish results and repeat one another's experiments. Institutions like it — and the Académie des Sciences in France — turned science from individual inquiry into an organized, cumulative and publicly funded activity.
- Stellar parallax
- The apparent shift in a nearby star's position as the Earth orbits. Its absence was a serious empirical objection to heliocentrism, correctly reasoned and unanswerable until instruments improved — it was not measured until 1838. Knowing this stops you from treating the geocentric case as superstition.
- Galileo's trial (1633)
- Condemned for teaching heliocentrism as established truth after agreeing not to, and forced to recant. It is genuine evidence of institutional conflict between Church authority and open inquiry — but Galileo had Jesuit support for his observations and had lampooned the pope in print, so the standard "science versus religion" reading is too simple.
- Tabula rasa
- Locke's claim that the mind begins as a blank slate and is written on by experience. Its political force is enormous: if nothing is innate, then people are products of environment and education, and reforming institutions can improve them — the premise beneath most Enlightenment reform programs.
- General will
- Rousseau's term for what a people collectively wills as a community, distinct from the sum of private interests and from a simple majority. Obeying it is obeying oneself as a citizen, so a dissenter may be "forced to be free" — read by some as the foundation of democratic sovereignty and by others as an opening to coercion.
- Separation of powers
- Montesquieu's argument in *The Spirit of the Laws* that liberty requires legislative, executive and judicial power to be held separately so each checks the others. It shaped the United States Constitution directly and remains the standard structural argument against concentrated authority.
- Cesare Beccaria
- In *On Crimes and Punishments* (1764) he argued that punishment should deter rather than avenge, be proportionate and certain rather than severe, and that torture and the death penalty are both ineffective and unjust. It is the clearest case of Enlightenment reasoning producing concrete legal reform.
- Catherine the Great as enlightened absolutist
- She corresponded with Voltaire and Diderot, convened a Legislative Commission and codified law — and after Pugachev's rebellion (1773–75) extended noble privilege and tightened serfdom. She is the standard evidence that enlightened absolutism meant rational, efficient administration rather than any transfer of power.
What examiners penalize here
- Bridge Units 4’s two halves: the Scientific Revolution’s core claim — that **human reason can discover natural laws** — is exactly what Enlightenment thinkers extended from the physical universe to human society, government, and economics. State that link to show causation.
- Enlightenment ideas are the intellectual fuel for later revolutions. When a prompt asks about the causes of the American or French Revolutions, cite **Locke’s** natural rights and consent and **Rousseau’s** popular sovereignty as direct influences on revolutionary demands.
- For continuity-and-change prompts, the public sphere is a durable change: salons, print, and public opinion created a habit of **criticizing authority** that outlived the Enlightenment and helped make possible the revolutionary challenges of the late eighteenth century.
- The Galileo affair is the standard evidence for science versus religion, and the standard answer oversimplifies it. Galileo had powerful clerical supporters, the Jesuits confirmed his telescopic observations, and the trial turned substantially on his agreement not to teach heliocentrism as established truth and on his lampooning of the pope. A strong response names the genuine institutional conflict *and* the political and personal specifics.
- The most common error is treating Hobbes as a defender of divine right. He is not — he is the opposite kind of absolutist. His sovereign is legitimate because subjects would rationally consent, not because God appointed him. Say "secular absolutism" and the distinction is earned in three words.
