What examiners penalize here

• Connect decolonization back to earlier units: the **nationalism** Europe spread through imperialism (Unit 6) returned as the driving force of independence. Showing this long-term continuity strengthens essays on the legacy of empire.
• Use the welfare state and integration to argue **continuity and change**: postwar leaders deliberately built systems to avoid repeating the **1930s** — economic security to prevent Depression-style desperation and integration to prevent war. Framing policy as a response to the past earns analytical credit.
• For the final period, argue the big arc: the twentieth century moved from the **catastrophes** of world war and totalitarianism to **integration and cooperation** (the EU) and the end of the Cold War — while globalization and resurgent nationalism keep alive the enduring European tension between **unity and national identity**.
