Industrial Revolution
The shift from hand production and agriculture to powered machinery and factories, beginning in Britain around 1780. It changed where people lived, how they worked and what a family was.
Why Britain first
Coal and iron close together, navigable rivers and canals, agricultural surplus and enclosure freeing labor, colonial markets and raw cotton, available capital, and a legal order protecting property and patents.
Agricultural revolution
Crop rotation, selective breeding and enclosure raised yields with less labor. It fed a growing urban population and supplied the workers to become it.
Enclosure
Converting common land to private fields. It raised productivity and dispossessed smallholders, supplying the labor force that filled the factories.
Factory system
Concentrating production, power and workers in one place under supervision and clock discipline. The loss of control over time and pace is what artisans resented most.
Steam engine
Watt's improved engine freed industry from water power and river sites, allowing factories in towns and coalfields. The enabling technology of both industry and railways.
Railways
Cut transport costs and times dramatically, created integrated national markets, and generated enormous demand for coal, iron and capital. The clearest single accelerator of industrialization.
Second Industrial Revolution
From roughly 1870: steel, chemicals, electricity, internal combustion and the telegraph. Science-based, capital-intensive, and led by Germany and the United States rather than Britain.
Urbanization
Rapid growth of industrial cities without matching sanitation or housing, producing overcrowding, disease and high mortality. Public health reform is the political response.
Standard of living debate
Whether early industrialization raised or lowered workers' living standards. Real wages eventually rose; life expectancy, working conditions and autonomy in the first generations are far less favorable. A good essay handles both.
Child and female labor
Both were widespread in early textile mills, valued for low wages and small hands. Factory Acts progressively restricted them, and the reformed ideal became the male breadwinner household.
Separate spheres
The middle-class ideal of a public working world for men and a domestic one for women. It described a middle-class aspiration rather than working-class reality, where women's wages were essential.
Luddites
Textile workers who destroyed machinery in the 1810s, protesting the displacement of skilled labor. Not opposition to technology as such but to how it was introduced.
Trade unions
Workers organizing to bargain collectively. Illegal in Britain until the 1820s and then progressively legalized, becoming a mass political force by the century's end.
Chartism
A British working-class movement from 1838 demanding universal male suffrage, the secret ballot and paid MPs. It failed immediately and its demands were nearly all enacted within a lifetime.
Utilitarianism
Bentham's principle of the greatest happiness for the greatest number, used to justify systematic reform of law, prisons and administration on measurable grounds.
Classical liberalism
Free trade, limited government, constitutional rule and property rights, supported chiefly by the industrial middle class. Its suffrage demands were tied to property, not universal.
Socialism
Advocacy of collective ownership of production to end exploitation and inequality. Utopian socialists built model communities; Marx claimed a scientific account of why capitalism must give way.
Marx and Engels, The Communist Manifesto
1848. History as class struggle, capitalism as inevitably producing a proletariat that will overthrow it. The most influential political text of the century.
New imperialism
The late-nineteenth-century scramble for Africa and Asia, driven by raw materials and markets, strategic rivalry, national prestige, and racial and civilizing ideologies.
Berlin Conference
1884–85. European powers agreed rules for partitioning Africa without African representation. The standard evidence for imperialism as a system negotiated among Europeans.
Consequences of imperialism for Europe
Cheap raw materials and captive markets, intensified great-power rivalry, and a racial hierarchy of thought that shaped domestic politics as well as colonial rule.
Demographic transition
Falling death rates followed by falling birth rates, producing rapid population growth in between. Improved nutrition and sanitation drove the first; deliberate family limitation drove the second.
Zollverein (1834)
The Prussian-led customs union that removed internal tariffs among most German states. It created a national market that drove industrial growth and simultaneously built the economic case for unification under Prussia rather than Austria — a direct bridge from economic to political history.
Great Exhibition of 1851
Held in the Crystal Palace in London, it displayed British industrial supremacy to six million visitors. It is useful as evidence of how industrialization was experienced and advertised — as national achievement and spectacle — rather than only as a set of production statistics.
Putting-out system
Also called cottage industry or proto-industrialization: merchants supplied raw materials to rural households who spun and wove at their own pace. Understanding it is what makes the factory's novelty clear — the change was not machinery alone but the loss of control over time and process.
Bessemer process
Blowing air through molten iron to burn off impurities, making steel cheap for the first time. Cheap steel is the material basis of the second industrial revolution: rails, ships, bridges and tall buildings all follow from it.
Limited liability
The legal rule that a shareholder risks only the sum invested. It made the joint-stock corporation the standard form for capital-hungry industries, separated ownership from professional management, and is the reason steel mills and electrical networks could be financed at all.
Cartels and trusts
Agreements among firms to fix prices, allocate markets or restrict output, most systematically developed in Germany where they were legal and encouraged. They mark the end of the classical model of many small competing producers and the beginning of the modern debate over industrial concentration.
Combination Acts
British laws banning workers' associations, passed in 1799–1800 in the shadow of the French Revolution and repealed in 1824. Their repeal made trade unions legal, and the sequence shows the state's response to industrial society shifting from suppression toward regulation.
Factory Act of 1833
Limited child labor in textile mills and — the decisive provision — created paid inspectors to enforce it. Earlier acts had set limits nobody checked. It is the standard example that a rule without an enforcement mechanism changes nothing.
Public health reform
Chadwick's 1842 report linked disease to filth and drainage, and cholera epidemics forced action: sewers, clean water and the British Public Health Acts of 1848 and 1875. Urban mortality fell sharply, which is the strongest evidence available for the optimist side of the standard-of-living debate.
European emigration, 1815–1914
Roughly fifty million people left Europe, chiefly for the Americas, driven by population growth, agricultural displacement, famine and, later, cheap steamship passage. It relieved pressure at home, exported European populations and culture, and reshaped the societies that received them.
