- The Perfekt: Talking About the Past14 min · 3 objectivesForm the Perfekt tense with the correct auxiliary (haben or sein) and a past participle · Build past participles of weak, strong, and mixed verbs · Describe completed daily activities using the Perfekt in conversation
- Präteritum vs. Perfekt & Reflexive Verbs13 min · 3 objectivesChoose between the Präteritum and the Perfekt according to register and context · Recognize the Präteritum forms of high-frequency verbs like sein, haben, and the modals · Use reflexive verbs and pronouns to describe daily routines
What examiners penalize here
- For the interpersonal speaking task, narrating past events fluently means reaching for the Perfekt automatically. Pre-memorize the participles of your most-used verbs (**gemacht, gesehen, gegessen, gegangen, gefahren, gewesen**) so you are not assembling them under time pressure.
- For the presentational-writing (essay) task, a formal narrative or report may call for the **Präteritum** throughout to match the written register, whereas an email to a friend uses the **Perfekt**. Matching tense to register shows sociolinguistic control that graders notice.
Practice German Lang
Our practice bank is drawn from across the whole course rather than filtered to one unit, which is closer to how the exam asks anyway — it will not tell you which unit a question is testing.
